    No CDL??? What the??????

    Hi all,
I don't usually frequent the D2 section, but as some will have spotted by my question earlier today in GC, I'm looking at purchasing a TD5.
I've just been reading up on some 'stuff' about them, and one thing that set some alarm bells off, was the fact that Land Rover decided to not put in a CDL because they thought the Traction Control etc, would take care of all that.
    Is this true??? Surely not............

It is true (and it does "take care of all that ")

Depending on your model, it may be possible to fit a lever if you find the presence of such a thing reassuring

    Yes, it would be reassuring......

It depends on the modell, there are some with factory fitted ''complete'' working CDL, some(up to 2001) with the internals present but without linkage, some after 2001 with no CDL "hardware" at all...so if you are searching for one choose one with working CDL or at least with equipped transfer box and you can fit the linkage...simple as that

Plenty of D2's with CDL - just get a D2a or early model D2. Then you can have the best of both worlds - traction control and CDL.

I reckon the traction control is great, although I also would like to fit a CDL to my 2002 TD5.
Going across the Murray, she pulled through the wombat holes no problems ( which stopped some of our intrepid magazine journalists) and climbed Mt Pinnibar no problem and it was pretty cut up.

I have been told that the centre diff lock is useful on muddy steep climbs, where you may stop with Traction control only, but I haven't had the situation occur.

I have found mine fine on sand, and didn't get stuck when a few D3-4s did on a training day. The secret on sand was to modulate the throttle if you heard traction control clacking away.
So don't be put off a 2002 , as you can always fit a centre diff lock if you get problems.
    Regards Philip A
BTW the 2002 TD5 auto is EU3 which means 40NM extra torque over earlier , at a lot cheaper price than a D2A.

The ETC alone is awesome if the pads, fluid, discs are good and you know how the driver input makes it work....BUT with CDL it makes it more sure footed up steep hills and more able when taking off from stationary in powdery deep sand. Cheers

Ohh...and without CDL they can be dangerous reversing down a steep slippery hill especially with HDC on. I have seen the outcome. Not pretty.

    Cheers
