    Smile Advice on Importing

Firstly hello to you all on the forum from the UK.

I'm shortly coming over and I'm thinking about shipping my discovery2. Without a full life story I'll be around Brisbane for a year before going up to Darwin. Does anyone have any info/advice about costs or if you think it's worth the money/hassle. I'm happy for any and all advice!

Cheers everyone, great forum and I look forward to exploring of your beautiful country, hopefully, in my Disco!

    Bruce

    Hi and welcome.
IMHO you would be better off not bringing the D2 with you for the following reasons:

    1. The cash you make on the sale in the UK will be an advantage when buying a new car here because of the exchange rate that is in your favour
    2. Shipping costs, taxes, port fees etc are in the region of $6k, which could also go towards a new one
    3. Rego here will cost you circa $1500 including the full safety inspection, part of which you would not have buying a car here.
    4. The D2 would be on the sea for about 3 months. During that time you would have to hire/borrow/buy another car for transport

Emotional attactment aside it doesn't make financial sense to import a car that could easily be replaced here.

    Hope this helps,
    Phil B

D2's are cheap. Not financially worth bringing one in. If your going to go to that effort and expense go find something more exciting to bring over!

AFAIK, an immigrant has to own and operate( ie no absences from country of origin) for at least a year prior to import.

I should also add ,very little floor and chassis rust in OZ D2s.

Exactly, they are cheap enough especially by the time you add shipping and the hassles of clearance once arrived.
I'd probably bring a defender if i was really attached to it but not a disco of any model - well maybe a Camel Trophy version.
