    Would be my pick.

I can't agree with that. Reliability was either no different or slightly worse in v8 models as the castings got even thinner...

I know of a few examples but as a direct example my late 01 O2 compliance v8 5 speed has been much more reliable than my good mates 02 d2a v8 5 speed. Both purchased new from the same dealer. Both serviced there. Mine has done a lot more towing and off-roading too. Mine has done 100k more but mostly city work.

    Cheers

Nice. Can't beat a 5 speed in Disco. You feel like you are driving.

I've had both, a Manual which was my 1st D2 in 99, and 3 Auto's starting about 2004, suspension has varied from sls and ace to just sls to spring conversion from sls, to be honest all of the suspension setups were good. Although now that I have ACE and SLS again I'm going to maintain these systems, the ride and cornering is excellent in my opinion for a big unaerodynamic box like a D2.

So the Auto and Manual are both great to drive in my opinion. I really missed the Manual when I bought an Auto. Been driving an Auto for 11 years now, they are two great gearboxes and both great cars either way. Never had a V8 tho, so can't comment on that.

From experience too, the D2a 03-04 is definitely the way to go, has CDL and upgraded bits and pieces, watch out for a porous head/diesel in the sump issue though on the TD5, people will tell you it was all sorted out by then, but that's not correct, I had to replace a head on a 2004 TD5, not fun. You must get a pre-purchase inspection by a Landrover expert mechanic in my opinion, they know what to look for in these vehicles, where the others really don't know where to start a lot of the time.

    Good luck! Great car.....

Except downhill when the manual just rules over auto with HDC. And given thats the most dangerous part of offroading thats a good thing.

    Cheers

Been over this before. Low 1, M mode activated, drive through the brakes for a few metres or so to get fluid lock up and the auto just walks down steep hills. Its when the back tries to overtake you that you start having problems
