Congrats to sierrafery for saying in early posts it is more than likely injector seals.
Done the swap earlier today in between going out to do other jobs. So far I have driven it not too far but for 40mins and it would have normally stopped during that time, happily it ran without missing a beat. Another thing to note is I can not hear the fuel pump at all now even when at idle so although it didn't sound like cavitation it must have been air running through the return line.
It appears only the copper washer/s had gone bad as I didn't get any diesel in the oil but was obviously getting air in the injectors.
Oddly enough 1 injector had a different O-ring to the others so maybe they hadn't changed all previously. As for the injector seat they were all intact it was just that 1 injector had some kind of seal between the nozzle and body which the others had worn through or never had (just carbon build up in there).
Only small change I have noticed is a bit of a vibration and idle, not all the time seems to come and go. I have to recheck the auto fluid as some was lost when the cooler leaked the other day while chasing this issue.
As for the camshaft lobes and followers that'll be another day and more money I guess.

That's great news although my money was on the pump. Did you put the injectors back in the order they were initialy if not it could be the cause of vibration at idle.

Yes was well aware of the coding so all injectors went out and back in same places. Have codes written done on my bit of cardboard.

If you have a Nanocom or Hawkeye it might be worthwhile reinstalling the injector codes. After owning mine for 7 years I did that and it ran much smoother. I believe that when work was done on the head before my ownership they were mixed up.
I don't have either nano or hawk. But I may take it somewhere so it can be checked. That vibration has disappeared today, I grew some balls and took it for a long 1.5hr trip and didn't miss a beat.

The vibration was probably just a little residual air in the injectors and is quite usual when they have been reinstalled and takes a little while to clear.
I had this many years ago, the copper injector seals that came with the top end kit, ended up being just rubbish, which was odd as the kit was a good known brand such as Felpro that I'd used for many years previous, since then, again ive only used the genuine injector seals.

Yea for the injectors I've gone genuine parts only. For other parts I still get at least OEM but I usually steer clear of aftermarket.
