How about these?
Landrover TD5 Diesel harmonic balancer | Ross Performance Parts
"We have set a preliminary price of $880.inc taxWe also recondition the old ones for $440"
Prices quoted @ 2013 so they might have increased since then.
While I would never just try that out on a customers TD5, if it was my own, I'd prolly take the risk. I'm tempted to order one and put it on my dads TD5
But yes as you point out, the long run it may well end up costing that amount on top of a good quality one!

98% of all Land Rovers built are still on the road.
The other 2% made it home.
Cost difference between Britpart and Genuine seals: £2.04. Knowing that your brakes won't fail at any moment: Priceless.
As I've seen the last of the genuine ones I got and looking at the pics of the Ross one in another thread, this is the way I'm going for customers vehicles.
The down side of this for me is it's still another part that I need to keep in stock.

Received my new Ross HB on Friday. Along with some other bits and pieces. Ended up going through Karcraft after shopping around they were the cheapest after special work discounts were added.
As the lugs have broken off my HB I am not able to use my tool to take it off so taking it to my BIL BIL's who is a mechanic to fit it up.
I wonder how he is going to react working on Landrover. droppi tuff on Tuesday to get it fitted.
New HB is A WORK OF ART in the flesh.
Joel has lent me his special home made fan bolt tool and with my other special fan and HB tools it shouldn't be an issue for Ed to fit it up.
Cheers, Chris
As your using a non Landie mechanic make sure he knows the drill for fitting the new piece.
-No locking goo on the threads(or you won't get it off again).
-Torque to spec, a 1/2 drive torque wrench will not have the range.
If it's not tightened correctly it will/may/could come loose and damage the crank, lots of threads of this post mechanics.
