you can never carry enough spares it seems

One of our members ( won't mention his name so not to embarrass him ) finally after months of various broken parts on his D2a, finally has got within coo-ee of the cape , traveling via the old telegraph track.
I loaded up his vehicle with just about every spare I could think of to make him an emergency kit. To pay for what he used and return the rest undamaged, everything from fuel pumps to brake pads so we thought we'd have him safe.

I got a phone call this evening, it was him, he said "you know what we forgot to pack in his kit for him?"

    A rear diff centre!.
Seems he was trying to recover his mates stuck Pootrol and smashed the diff centre He had to drive 300 kms on the front diff to find some where with phone reception. He's at Coen I think it was, He has sourced a disco 1 diff up there in Cairns and was checking if it would fit.
He also met another forum member who was crossing some deep river and he forgot to engage low range in did d2 TD5 and water ran into the cabin and swamped his Trans ECU and caused it to get stuck in Park.
After cleaning out the ecu and drying it it drove!

He's having fun though. He also said he got towed and got towed through a fire that had started.

But it goes to show you can't have to many spares on these types of trip.
    Cheers,
    Mario

Yeah, unfortunately this poor bloke had to rebuild his dusted engine, fixed transfer case, then the auto blew up after his cooler hose let go, and a few other things, he'd been at it for months getting it trip ready then this happens. I only packed him 1 x air filter, the dust up there clogged his newly fitted on already, so now he's on his spare.
He's certainly having an adventure. Can't wait for some pics from him.
    Cheers,
    Mario

Carrying all the (weight) of the spares is often the reason for the failures

Can picture it now .....Joe Blogs with his blown head gasket on the Tanami being rescued by a mechanic............
So Mr mechanic , do you think carrying 100 litres of water , 100 litres of extra fuel , with 4 people and 2 tons of off road caravan might have caused it?.
Well Joe I see you have a spare fuel pump and drive belt , not to mention that spare water pump ..........there's your problem .

There needs to be a balance between carrying the right amount of spares and not overloading the vehicle, carrying spare diffs /gearboxes etc is just not feasible unless a convoy of the same type of vehicles can spread the load

Have you seen some of these guys in trips?

I've seen people carrying spare complete sets of shocks, a couple of coils, water pumps, a diff centre, full sets of hoses, spark plugs (petrol), suspension bushes even trailing arms...

Then add the house/kitchen sink etc...

Recent club trip across the Simpson - all failures were suspension related.
Not some of them, all of them..

People who can't travel light suffer the most. Followed by those who won't lower tyre pressures....

    Tombie is bang on.
I know sometimes things go wrong and won't presume to know this vehicle, but I've gotta wonder what really happened during the extensive pre trip checks.
Air filters on the D2 without a snorkel is always a problem in dust, but the rest is...well...
Any way glad he is back on the way, I suspect more problems will present themselves before the trip is over, but it should be a good vehicle by the time he gets back

Exactly,we even have the ultra light alloy camp chairs,Boab i think they are.Tools are often a challenge, what to take that doesn't weigh a lot but might be needed.

The other things that often cause failures are the aftermarket add ons, some are not even needed in the first place.

There must be a lot of Road side assist and auto club call outs at some schools. I've seen so many mothers of children pick ups and drop offs driving the big cruisers and pootrols loaded up with awnings roof top storage bins , dual spare tyres on the back and a spare on the roof and the big Codan Aerial on the back and even extra bling and weight.
