    What? An oil Leak???

Well while the Disco was on the hoist getting new ball joints, the mechanic says "your Land Rover is dripping on my floor"..

Yes rear main seal, too expensive to fix. He says "I don't think it's the rear main seal"?? So up she goes and out comes the light.

Inside the bell housing is dry???? Bummer more money???

So he checks the sump bolts and finds all but three loose??? So he tightens the rest up for me and will degrease it before he finishes.

So my question is do they come loose from vibration? It has had the sump off in the last year..

Some nuts and bolts will work themselves loose. Spend a day underneath with your favourite socket set and check everything.
However landy sump gaskets are not normally a marvel of engineering....

I had a very elusive oil leak and only found it when I got a flat tyre and

discovered that my jack was the culprit

Have you fixed it? I have to keep mine upright or it'll empty itself.

As for other leaks. I have an oil leak near the back of the motor somewhere. I bought a new tappet cover gasket a couple of years ago but orederd the wrong one (there's 2 different for the TD5). So each time I go in for a rego inspection, I take the (worng) tappet cover gasket and tell the mech the "oil leak is coming from the tappet cover". I show him I have the gasket to fit in the next couple of days and he passes it. One day I'll get the right gasket.

    Happy Days

    Hi Joel

I tried to fix it but it still leaked so I bought a Chinese 4 ton one for $40 and

I will weld the little u shaped top from the Land Rover jack to it. I hope it

lasts longer than my Chinese fuel pump.

The Disco was due for a service so I thought a good time to replace the sump gasket as tightening the bolts didn't seem to slow it down much. I found one loose???

Thanks to Roverlord a new sump gasket & oil filter metal gasket were aquired.

I read the instructions on RAVE and here then got into the job.

Assemble dry they say?? I spent 1.5 hours scraping off grey silicone everywhere.

While I had the sump off a quick check of the oil pump bolt (tight) and oil pump pickup (silicone bits and plastic bits??) cleaned.

I put it all together with the cotton through the gasket holes trick (thanks) and all went well. A week later and all dry (touch wood).

The sump gasket (supposedly) needs some sealant in three specific spots.

More info here: www.discovery2.co.uk / TD5 "Famous" Oil Pump Bolt

However, my rocker cover gasket is leaking and it drips down to the bottom of the bellhousing.
Others to check are the front and rear cam plug seals. The rear is a bastard to get to
