sounds good in theory, but most situations on greasy hills don't allow for that, especially backwards....

Yup! When descending either nose first or tail first my preference has always been to "drive thru the brakes" rather than rely on the HDC which my brother in law (a retired career soldier) aptly christened "angel gear" when i demonstrated it to him last year on Hearne Spur in the Victorian High Country. Most times on a good surface for a nose first descent of upto a couple hundred metres HDC is great - for everything thing else ie loose or slippery and or l o n g descents that require technical driving it's "drive thru the brakes" time and always with CDL engaged.

Ok, im not talking about using HDC at all
When reversing/braking on a greasy steep slope the abs detects a wheel locking & activates the abs which releases the very wheel/wheels keeping you from skating out of control backwards.
