Smile Looking to buy my first disco!

Hey Guy's i'm looking at a few TD5 Discovery's but was wondering if there is anything I should look out for when taking one for a test drive. At the moment i'm looking at a 2004 Auto with 148000 kms of the clock.

    This is the ad

"Amazing value 'Go Anywhere' 4WD! Exceptional 2.5L Turbo Diesel Engine, Dual Zone Climate Control, Cruise Control, Alloys, ABS, Power Steering, Automatic Gearbox, Electrics, Very Low Kilometres, Books and in overall very good condition! "

The one thing I noticed is in one of the images the plastic engine cover is missing should I be concerned if that is un accounted for. And lastly what are they like to service and is there anything major due at 150.000 kms as I really don't want to buy it and need to spend any money on it.

They are asking $12800 (Is that fair)

Look at the fuel pressure regulator and make sure it is not leaking its on the right hand side back of the engine.also if you are near a landrover dealer have it code checked for faults there are lots that can be checked but if I was buying this car I would give it to someone who works on landrovers and give it a good going over. This is cheap insurance considering how much the car is but great cars if you get a good one.

Check the abs, Traction control and hill descent control lights come on with ignition switch and then go out. Some unscrupulous people mask the 3 amigos by taking the bulbs out. And for thec3 amigos - these same lights stay on.

    Smile Ancillary drive belt

I've noticed according to the service schedule at 160 thousand kms the ancillary drive belt is due to be changed, how bigger Job is that and what would I be looking at to get that replaced at a shop?

Check fan pulley for movement and crankshaft pulley/harmonic balancer. Especially if the serpentine gives off some tweety bird noises when first starting, and when switching off the mighty Td5.

The cover is called an acoustic cover, and is only there to deaden engine noise a bit. Quite a lot of people don't like them and remove them - I prefer to have mine in place. Not having it there won't change anything except the noise level. You could ask if they actually still have it somewhere. If not, you could probably find one at a wreckers.

    Hi Princt,
I saw the same ad. and had a second look at it. It's a nice-looking car and I thought the price was pretty fair for one that looks as smart as it does. I paid more for mine, with 178,000 km on the clock.

If you would like to send me a PM (Private Message) through this website, I can tell you a LR specialist in Perth who will do a check of the car for $100 + GST.

Replacing the serpentine belt is quite easy, but you need to make sure you get the right one. The belt differs according to whether the car has "A.C.E." or not, and possibly other things. You just need to specify what it has and what it doesn't when you order the belt. The belt is not very expensive (about $50).
If you plan to do routine servicing yourself, you need to know that there are two oil filter elements to replace (ordinary spin-on and centrifugal one). A Workshop Manual is a really good investment.

    Good luck!

Do a forum search on this topic, then reconsider the above requirement.

Even a well sorted example will require regular "maintenance" (more than std servicing) to keep in top reliable form. You do get a lot of value for your money but don't expect it to only require oil & filter changes.
