I'm on my third waterpump in 12 months, they dont last forever it seems.
Hi,
I have a coolant leak from somewhere at the bottom of my engine. I know this because I have a small pool of coolant appearing under the car after it is driven.
The coolant is dripping along the front of the oil sump towards the back and then dripping onto the front axle.
There is no evidence of the water pump leaking and it was replace 18 months ago. There is no sign of coolant leaking from anywhere at the front of the engine.
I can not see a coolant pipe or connectors low down at the front of the engine so I'm at a loss as to where it is coming from. There is an engine plug just above the sump at the front of the engine that has a bit of coolant on it, but I do not know what the plug is for (coolant or oil) and as the engine gets hot I can not tell if this is the source or just a collection point.
Any suggestions?
I'm on my third waterpump in 12 months, they dont last forever it seems.

Pedro if your on your 3 pump in a year!!!!
then I would suspect your viscous coupling might be the problem or an out of alignment of one of the pulleys, they can destroy WP seals as it puts off centre pressure on the pump.
If the viscous has any excess forward and rearward movement on its shaft it could be the problem.
Cheers,
Mario
When I had that same problem , it was weeping from the ends of the head gaskets.
Get underneath with a torch and shine a light up where the heads corners meet the block and see if there is any coolant stains.

Mario
Just when I thought I'd found it.
I have a weep collecting in the corner where the crank case meets the engine sump. Please can someone give me another course apart from the timing cover.
Why do I get the feeling this is going to be an expensive repair?
Well i had a similar leak - it turnout to be leaking in 2 spots.
I had coolant coming down the front of the motor on the drivers side, dripping on to the axle.
I also had coolant dripping down the passenger side at the rear of the motor, on to the bell-housing, and then on my garage floor.
Had no coolant in the oil, just leaking externally.
Initially i had to top up about 100ml a week, but then all of a sudden got worse.
In the end pulled the intake off, the rocker covers off, and was able to see that coolant was seeping from the front drivers corns head gasket, and the rear passenger corner head gasket.
My mechanic said he had seen it before on LR disco v8s.
Says that some gaskets seem to fail on the external side of the water jacket causing an external coolant leak.
He said either try some k-seal in the coolant as a temp fix, or replace the head gaskets.
Always had a fear of doing the head gaskets as to what else would be found, but in the end replaced both head gaskets, didn't even need to get heads machined. Engine had done 220ks.
New gaskets not more leaks - downside is it cost me about
$1500
Upside - no more leaks.
Funny I just noticed 2x20cent size pools on my garage floor on the passenger side of my 2002 TD5 auto.
I got under with a torch and it looks to be coming from the hose that meets the steel pipe from the thermostat and the goes up to the steel pipe to the pump.
I replaced the hoses 2 years ago with genuine, but the hose has always leaked out of the end reinforcing threads, meaning there is a leak from the inner part of the hose into the reinforcing .
It drops onto the axle and the bump stop mount.
It initially leaked for about 1500Kms then stopped, but has now started again.
Maybe the cold weather.
I think I will put it under "active watch" as the reservoir level has not moved yet.
If you get under with a torch, you should be able to see where it is coming from as the red dye stays for quite a while then turns white.

I've been cleaning and drying and monitoring. I have a slight weep coming from the timing cover, passenger side, just below the water pump moulding. I can not see any active drips, but there are a couple of beads of coolant on the gasket when the engine cools down.
Anyone know of a good timing cover removal and replacement tutorial. Preferably one with lots of pictures and tips for someone that is enthusiastic but not experienced?
Or am I better off putting in some K-seal until I can afford to get the job done by a professional?
Is it a Td5 or a V8? Your signature says both and we have replies from both V8 and Td5 owners.
Dave.
I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

It is a V8.
I went to get a TD5 and came back with a V8, hence my member name.
