Thread: Interesting fuel pump failure indicator

Everything was going smoothly until a few days ago when my manual Td5 started lugging when I pushed on the accelerator. Car could start and move along at low speed on the flat but no power to go up hills, even little ones (would stall).

After some searching by the mechanic, found that the fuel pump fuse had blown. So, car will start and run on the flat without a fuel pump. Apparently the injectors have just enough "suck" to do this. Replaced the fuse and runs normally for a day or so then same issue.

I have done 200k with original fuel pump and have been told this is way overdue for failure so assume the fuses blowing is a dicky fuel pump. Glad I was home when this happened and not out in the donga. Any other thoughts as to cause would be welcome.

If your's is fitted with water in fuel sensor unplug it, tie the plug as to not touch earth and drive it so ... if the fuse will not blow this way it means the water sensor is the problem...it's on the same fuse with the pump, actually the water in fuel warning should come on if the pump fuse blows if everything is OK.
