A nice high compression 4.6 rover V8 in a D2 would be a nice upgrade. Unless you have the cash, time and patience to do an LS1 conversion I wouldn't do it.
Mate your right about the torque figures - didnt see the axis note at first.

Remember! my V8 was thought of and built to tow a caravan so it will never see over 3K.(maybe sans caravan and Di:angel::twisted:)

FWIW I think the 4HP gearbox ratios are the biggest thing wrong.
Huge amounts of torque are required to shift 4T with a 3 speed.
while it doesnt really need a lower first,(the V8's are truly excellent off idle) it needs a either a 4th gear around .8 or a 5 speed finishing at .8
just look at the first 5 ratios's of the 6hp,,
