    I think only part of the situation is the cubic inch increase - its the stroke increase that causes the big torque increase over the 4.0. The 4.6 punches above its weight and is an old fashioned long stroke motor that develops tremendous torque off idle - far lower than Gen III's for example and much lower than the V8 Toyota motor in the later 100 series Land Cruisers.

    I wonder if a stud kit and steel gasket would be the best set up (per one of the posters above) for longevity of the head gaskets and compression.

    yes the 4.6 peak is below the peak of the ls1 (3000rpm vs 4000rpm)
    but the ls1 at 3000rpm makes more torque than the 4.6 at 3000rpm

    Hi mate.

    I will edit that one for you based on the last iteration of the 4.6's in high compression and thor manifold and injection:

    166 kW at 4,750 rpm and 407 Nm at 2,600 rpm. If the Chev develops about 446Nm @4400rpm then there is now way that it would develop the low down 407nm at 2600 as the little 4.6 achieves.

    The later 6.0 and bigger Chevvy was a cracker with everything going for it. But I recall the Gen III's (5.7) were regarded as peaky and un-V8 like in the lack of low down torque.

    i wrote that list 6 months ago and i cant remember where i pulled that data from, but it does seem your right on 407Nm. i probably pulled the gems data. yep. i was pulling 4.6 gems data, as i was writing a list of all my cars and the factor power n torque figues
    the ls1 has a very very flat torque curve

    Mate the Gen III had its own problems it seems with oil circulation issues. The wheels magazine and Modern Motor at the time made a point of saying that they had to be revved to get anywhere and the torque down low was not impressive. The later ones were much better on torque but dont know about piston slap/oil circ issues reported on the net.

    From that graph it looks like about 330nm at 2600 so well under the last version of the 4.6. Having said that I dont have the idle torque figures for the 4.6 but from memory it was very flat from idle also.

    oil circ issues and piston slap occurred on the early model. was fixed by the later models, the later models also had a better tune from the factory.

    i've got 2 vy ls1's. one in SS ute, one going into the d2. no issues on low town torque. the SS i rarely go over 2000rpm for daily driving.

    you'll need to convert it to Nm first. the graph isnt showing 330Nm

    If you use tin it will significantly increase your cr. Would highly recommend though.

    I have a mafless tuned LS1 in a VX calais. It's an auto and it does lack down low torque. But it does like to be revved and makes good power after about 2500 rpm. That's why you see a lot of guys changing diff ratios in them.
