plus the ls1 is better on fuel,
and the ls1 you can change the cams to bring the torque lower in the rev range and the ls1 is tuneable

the ratio in the auto is shocking.

    manual all the way.

A nice high compression 4.6 rover V8 in a D2 would be a nice upgrade. Unless you have the cash, time and patience to do an LS1 conversion I wouldn't do it.

and just to shoot myself in the foot, the disco manual gearbox (R380) is only rated for 380Nm.

so in theory the 4.6 bosch will kill it. (not as quickly as the ls1)

Remember! my V8 was thought of and built to tow a caravan so it will never see over 3K.(maybe sans caravan and Di)
all the **** I speak is aimed at that one use,, Ok?

FWIW I think the 4HP gearbox ratios are the biggest thing wrong.
Huge amounts of torque are required to shift 4T with a 3 speed.
while it doesnt really need a lower first,(the V8's are truly excellent off idle) it needs a either a 4th gear around .8 or a 5 speed finishing at .8

just look at the first 5 ratios's of the 6hp,,

i also disagree the 4.6 punches above its weight.
its displacement is 15% more than the 4.0. and it produces 15% more torque. which is as expected.
