I grew up with Holden motors and re-built a few. The high comp Thor 4.6 was well ahead of the 5000i (5.0 injected) holded V8 that graced the VN and VT Series 1. Despite being .4 litres smaller the little alloy Brit had more torque and it came in at a full 1000rpm less than the 5.0 holden. Even the HSV 5.0 VT had only slightly more torque but again max torque came in 1000 rpm higher.

In terms of weight of course the 4.6 was a lightweight compared to the cast iron motors.

I maintain the 4.6 Rover boxed above its weight. And the light weight made it perfect for offroading and handling.

    Cheers

    these are redbook vaules
    4.0 Thor
    136 kW @ 4750, 340 Nm @ 2600

    4.6 Thor
    160 kW @ 4750, 400 Nm @ 2600-3000

    4.0 thor vs 4.6 thor

    340Nm vs 400Nm

    400/340 = 1.176

ok, yes, so the 4.6 is 2.6% better than it should be.

oh, well yes, if you compare the 4.6 to the 5000i (i thought you meant compared to the 4.0)
the 5000i was a dinosaur but a very nice sounding dinosaur.

    Hmmm...
    I was considering a D3 V8....
D2 V8 HSEs don't cost that much these days.... would need a manual cog swapper...

    4.6 in the D2

Don't think the v8 d3 comes with anything but a slush box mate,

I love my 5 speed manual.

    Cheers

Yep, D3 V8 is auto only.
Was more referring to the 4.6 in a D2 needing an R380.
We need exhaust note vids too
