Small issue, so where do I start?

    Hi There,
Now the proud owner of a D2 2002 TD5 ES auto, as well as my RRS. Has a couple of issues not to be unexpected with this age of vehicle, one is a suspect head gasket, no problem got this covered, used to doing heads on TD5's.

The other problem is I have three lights on the dash TC, ABS and a vehicle on an incline facing down hill with an exclamation mark to the R/H side of it, all yellow. I am assuming that what ever the fault is none of these three items presently work.

Where do I start the diagnosis? Is this a common fault and it is possibly one of the ABS sensors not working, as a wild stab in the dark. Pray tell oh wise ones............

    Thanks in anticipation, Cheers Marty.

    The 3 amigoes
Have a search, and find a couple of weeks to read the causes.
Once you get to 254 faults recorded an intermittent fault needs wiping.
If you havent got a Nanocom, now is the time to buy one.By time you sort the problem it will have paid for itself in dealer ECU wipes
If it needs new discs they will cause a vibration that upsets speed sensors, then there are shuttle valves in the ABS,and on it goes.
    Buy a Nanocom

    The classic 3 amigo's.

There are a million threads on this, but look for a thread with option B , this seems to be a relatively simple fix , but have also read that finding a hill and using the HDC even if its bitumen and using it on a regular basis also helps.

You will need a code reader to clear them.

    Enjoy the D2.

    Hi Andy,
Thanks I had a feeling it would be something like this. I have an MSV 2 Extreme I just have to get the license approved, I'll have a bit of a look into it.

    Brilliant...............

    Hi Ean,
You were not kidding, looks like I have a lot of fun ahead. I have an MSV2 so I'll use that to investigate further.

    Hi There,
OK people got the hint, a plethora of information around this issue. Reset last night hasn't come back on yet. Starting on the head problem I'll worry about the "three amigos" when "Jezza" is back on the road and mobile again.

Thanks again to all for the info next time I'll try and find something a little more challenging.

    Hi Marty,

I will point you to the good oil for the head gasket as well, great tutorial by Psimpson which I used to supplement the workshop manual when I did my head gasket.

Pretty good to work on really, (once you get that inlet manifold and fuel cooler the hell out of the way).

Progress today... good way to spend the RDO

    Hi Bernie & others,
The added tutorial was a great help. The head is off and now at a local LR head servicing company in Carlisle. Looking at the fuel pressure regulator, it has what looks like a tubed connection, I have searched everywhere to find the tube that this connects to, I believe this is the tell tale so it might well not have anything on it.

Now the great clean-up begins, it is clearly obvious that the gaskets and hoses have seen some pressure, tell tale traces of OAT around the connections and gasket faces. I'll have to take the oil cooler, centrifuge and filter unit off to replace the block gasket.

The head gasket was a metal shim gasket made up of several layers of thin metal, are these gaskets prone to failure, good, bad or indifferent? Made in Germany, would this be an original?

Ah well keep me busy tomorrow I s'pose. I have attached a picture of the regulator connection is question.

    Thanks in anticipation, Cheers Marty.

Hi Again, that sounds like the normal head gasket, put the german one back in too, you don't want to be going back inside in a hurry. They seem to have a life of about 250K kms and from what I've heard, tend to give lots of warning that they are on the way out. As in, your cooling system will start to pressurise and blow coolant out every possible point to tell you that it's struggling. Mine behaved like this.

Also use genuine copper seals on the injectors, I had aftermarket ones and needed to go back a week later and pull the injectors again. Probably genuine head bolts too, they are torqued down an amazing amount.

There is a thickness marker on the gasket that came out, you put the same one back in. From memory one hole is the thinnest and three hole is the thickest.

the factory says that the head shouldn't be machined, i had mine done just the minimum that the machinist could manage. Ive done about 40K km since. You take your own chances on that decision. I also had the exhaust manifold machined while i was there.
