    D2 Wheel/Tyre advice

    G'day All,

I know this topic has been done to death but I'm still confused (so apologies for eating up more electrons)... I'm calling on the brains trust to ask for advice... I've got a 2004 Disco II (V8) with Pirelli Scorpion 255/55 R18 tyres. I live in Canberra (someone has to), land of the roundabout - I've had a few 'exciting moments' now in the wet when the back-end of the car has almost slid out when going around one of those roundabouts - I put it down to the tyres rather than my proactive driving style... (the tyres are getting on in years - time to replace them). From research it looks like 16" wheels are the way to go (in terms of more choice). Zu rims looks great but it's difficult to justify new rims/tyres that would cost around a quarter or maybe a third the value of the entire car! So I'm thinking of just plain steel wheels with some quality All-Terrain or Mud-Terrain tyres. I've read a bit about offset issues in terms of legality/what rims are available locally - sorry, I don't feel I have a definitive answer. In a nutshell - can anyone recommend a locally available (Australia) steel rim and tyre combination that would fit the car without needing any engineering mods? Thanks in Advance!

Stick with factory alloys, good offset and holds the bead at low Psi like nothing else. Much, lighter too.
16X8 is the way to go.
265/75/16 is a good size, that won't require many mods besides a mild suspension lift. Anything larger will rub.
For tyre selection, either BF Goodrich or Bridgestone would be my choice.

I will 2nd Muppets choice as being a good all round without being radical. By the way, I have scorpion tyres and if yours are letting go they must be as bald as a bats! Mine are about to be replaced and even in wet they still stick like the proverble! Just not so good in the muddy road out to home.

P38 wheels are the same size as the factory D2s.
Someone on here picked up a set a few weeks ago for $10 off eBay.

Forget the steels probably cost you more than second hand alloys.

16x8 255x65 were on my D2 have had 18's and now on 235x85x16 mud tyres.

You can get alloys in 16s for about $100 per wheel, just keep an eye on ebay or look out in wreckers.

    $100/wheel is expensive.
I've seen entire sets go for $150.
As said, keep your eye on the markets here or eBay, they're usually always about.
And X2 what schuy_1 said, my scorpion ATR have only come unstuck once in terms of on road driving, icy road with a loaded car and silly speeds into sharp corners

Strictly speaking it's illegal in NSW.
However, a D2 with a 2" lift and 265/75s looks exceptionally well proportioned so I'd doubt most people would look twice at it.

Can people who say it's probably illegal verify whether it is or not please.

It otherwise seems like a case of "the sky is falling".

I mean is it or is it not illegal?? It's illegal to change a light bulb in Victoria unless you're a licenced electrician!!!!........I think it is, anyway......maybe I'm just guessing.

    Cheers,

    Jason
