    It seems too be a detent problem.
    the button(switch) is fubar'd, it should close the circuit on one push and open it on another you should hear a gentle click if it works well...did you try to ''brutalise'' it a bit?

    No I was gentle with it . That was prpbably the previous owner who did that!
    Thanks guys. I will pull it apart and see if it is fixable or if I need to go to the wreckers.

    or you can improvise and find a nice small toggle switch or any on/off switch and addapt it there instead of the old one... it's simply about closing/opening that circuit between those 2 purple wires
