problem is it is only the larger torque converter the fits the 24 pump now nothing is impossible and looking at the bmw bell housing it has the same internal dimensions but that is another whole can of worms .
also time is a factor here but am following up on a couple of leads at the end of the day a 24 pump do not fit to a td5 but it is ok on the V8 22 trans.
I went though this a bit when I had my 4HP22 done. I was advised to go with the TD5 TC but with a stronger clutch and bearing. I must make it clear the stall was NOT changed at all. I was advised against changing the stall (or fitting a larger TC) as you can't gain something without loosing something when you change the TC stall. Much like spooling turbos. Big turbos take longer to spool, so do big torque converters this would then induce lag. Arguably the remap means the TD5 revs up quicker anyway to compensate but I was still advised against the larger TC or changing the stall.
The heavy duty clutch and bearing was to strengthen my TD5 TC for my remap. (I would have done it anyway as the cost difference was not much as if i recall correctly)
If i wanted to go slower down hills i'd be best to change the diff ratios.
So out of all that, due to the bell housing it might be easiest and best to fit a 3HP22 or 4HP22 pump with a reconditioned TD5 torque converter with a stronger clutch and bearing - keeping the factory stall. This would still give you a stronger auto without compromise on TC lag if that is what you are trying to achieve.
I have no idea if the TD5 TC (being the smallest one) will move enough fluid for the 4HP24 or if this is even an issue.
ALSO The TD5 TC has 3 bolts on it for the flex plate. The V8 TC has 4 bolts for the flex plate. You would need to modify the TC to fit either of the V8 TC's to a TD5 flex plate.
all good sourced a tranny out of a V8 disco pulled the pump and used the A clutch pack as was in better condition as diesel engines tend to be hard on the splines.
