Up until lately this forum survived financially with the bills being paid from the adverts that are clear to see at the top of each page. This kept the site free for a very long time, however in the last few years most people have stopped clicking through on banner adverts and many have advert blocker software on their PC's now so they never see the adverts at all.
This significantly reduced the income from the advertisers, thus why the site now uses a subscriber based model. However even these costs are still significantly reduced because there still are adverts and people who are clicking through on them.
Now here is the issue, Adsense the company that looks after all of these adverts on various forums and websites requires that the forums are GA rated and there is no profanity otherwise they cut the site off. If this happened here then either the site would fold or the level of subscription fees would have to dramatically increase which would impact on everyone, not just those who would like to use profanity while discussing how to keep their Land Rovers going.
Personally I'm quite happy that we can have mature discussions here on Aulro without the need for swear words being visible, which often when put in writing in a discussion usually end up in serious blues anyway.
The rules are a good compromise and still give people the latitude to show their concern or anger if need be without it being in everyone's faces.
Anyway that is why, in part, the rules are in place.
