    Oil Filter Repacement

Just been flicking through the owners manual and noticed this...........

    Oil filter renewal
NOTE: To avoid draining the oil pump, it is
essential that the engine is filled with oil to the
correct level, before the filter is removed. It is
therefore recommended that the engine oil is
renewed before work on the filter commences.

Is this particular to Land Rovers? Or does it apply to all cars.

In the past I've always drained the oil and then replaced the filter before refilling with oil.

After 18 years of changing oil filters on RV8's I've been extremely lucky to have the oil pump reprime every single time.

But you shouldnt take that chance and do it as per the manual.

As does 99% of the population, I suspect.

    Hi There,
Especially with engines that have the filter on top of the engine such as the 2.7 V6's and the 3.6 V8's. If you removed the filter after draining the oil and put the new oil in before you remove the filter you have maybe half a litre of contaminated oil going back into the sump.

Personally I'm in the 99% of the population that Biggin talks about and have been for 30 odd years. When possible I do maybe fill the filter 50 to 75% full of new oil when replacing the filter, as long as this doesn't involve getting oil down my arm and lubricating the filter so I can't get a good enough grip.

    Cheers Marty.

I also prime the filter with a little oil but i have overlooked that a couple of times and immediately got oil pressure.

    Cheers

That's all good unless you have a Mazda bt50 / ford ranger 5cyl diesel
in which case you have to change the oil within 10 mins otherwise it could be all over , they run a variable flow vane type oil pump that is unable to self prime.
