I took the Disco off the black stuff.

ok it was only Banyule State Park in Echuca. But! I did get to use the CDL and low range. and I got stuck, being a retard and going through the ruts that had a lot more mud in them than it looked like. A dumb move. I used the bottle jack to lift up the front, ARB bull bar, as the diff was grounded on the central high part. I dug out under the front wheels as best as I could and put branches under the wheels, and drove out backwards. Still up on the jack to keep the clearance. I moved back about 2 metres. So jack up and repeat, got out of the ruts, all good. Phew!

One thing is that as the wheels spun away, the TC did not seem to kick in. How can I test the TC? no faults logged in the ECU or the SLABS, so I guess the TC works?

I have been back a few times, I have avoided the ruts. I went up a fairly steep hill in low range 2nd gear, stalled just at the top. Hnadbrake on, restart and carry on.
IIf you want to make a commenbt on me being an idiot just send an email to "iwasanidiot@gmail.com"

    comments on TC issues welcome.

The good thing about Banyule State Park, for a n00b, is that it is so close to assistance, if needed.

My biggest worry was that I would need help from a toyota patriot navara, or similar.

    Cheers all Bo

If the wheels are all hanging in mid air or mid mud in your case the tc won't make a differance,at least one wheel has to have traction. You should be able to hear it kick in it makes a hell of a racket.do you have hill decent control.one way to check if the abs pump is working is activate that.it is the same.

The ABS works, I hit ther brakes and feel the ABS switching on and off through the brake pedal, and I hear a grunt grunt as it activates.

Hey mate. No offence intended but do an off road course. Best way to kill yourself is going out by yourself with little idea. 4wdriving is bloody dangerous and unless you are going with someone or a club who can give you some advice, you need some training. There are a heap of mobs that do courses around the north east or outer melbourne. Learn how to do a stall recovery, river crossing and how to winch or snatch safely.

Or you could ignore me. If you want to use TC and have a wheel in the air you need to ride the brakes so that TC will apply drive to a wheel that is easier to spin than the one with the brake on.

If 2 wheels on the same axle are in the air, ie diff grounded, brakes won't help the tc as they'll apply the same braking to both wheels. That's also assuming tc works when brakes and accel are applied. Cross axle also wouldn't work as you are alse equally braking the wheels with traction. One wheel in the air - tc should work no need for brakes. I can't see how braking would help in any of these situations.

To test tc, just slightly lift up 1 wheel and try to drive and see if it tries to move forward ofc the jack. Obviously be careful

I meant to clarify further but ran out of time. Right you are d2lee I was referring to one wheel in the air only but had to pretend to be working for a minute so just hit submit

actually I tried the "wheel in the air" trick last weekend and it's not very reliable. With a gentle throttle, the wheel just spins, you have to give it some heavy foot, but you could fly off the jack!

However off road - my TC (with CDL) WAS ABSOLUTELY AWSOME!!

I have a Patrol MQ shorty with front and rear diff locks and 33" simex mud tyres. The Disco on 29" road tyres was almost comparable up rocky, loose slopes, it was simply outstanding. My earlier GQ (with rear LSD) would not have done what the disco did (I've been over the same area many many times). The TC was like have diff locks, but I really can't explain why it was so capable on road tyres. In fact it sort of save my ass, as I didn't expect to be able to "drive" out of the rocky valley I was in.

The best training is failure, so don't stress we've all been their.
