exhaust manifold been skimmed but missing stud

Finally got round to it as fed up with 'slipping belt' scream every morning !

Got everything off quite easily, info the forum and RAVE was excellent and all went reasonably well. 3 broken studs, managed top Eazi-out 2 of the 3, but after some drama on the last, got sorted. Then got the manifold skimmed and broken blanking plate holes re-tapped.

Lined it back on when top right stud broke off. Tried to Easy-out, but it broke off in the stud. I was with Uncle who is aircraft engineer and owner of '74 Lotus Elan which he still keeps going, and his thoughts were that as the manifold has already warped and is now flat, the remaining bolts should hold it. We put a small amount of sealant around the ports, high temp cement sealant, and drove last night and today and everything holding and no leaks / noises so far.

I thought it would be good to see if anyone else has put manifold back on with a stud missing and what the outcome has been.

Worst case is that I will get it helicoiled if it starts to leak again, and now at least I know how to do it for next time.

they leak and in fairly short order as you have no clamping pressure on half the port.

you can wind a stud in with the manifold in place if you didnt butcher the thread with the easyout gear removign it.

Without removing studs it should take 2 to 3 hours to get the manifold off, it took just over an hour to put it back together, but take your time tightening nuts up evenly.

Thanks Dave, I used your write up in getting ready for the job which was a huge help. Easy out broken off in stud, so we decided to give it a go and see, the cement we used is a light brown colour, so will see as soon as I get a leak. Hoping I am not going to though.

    Broken exhaust Manifold studs

My front and rear studs broke on mine about 10 yrs ago. They would not come out so I drilled them out to 5/16 / 8 mm and re-tapped the holes to suit some S/steel studs which I just happen to have.
While I was at it I made the holes on the manifold slightly larger to allow for any movement.

Problem Solvered no more leakees, no more broken studs.
