Hello everybody,...
After nearly a decade of nursing my 300tdi D1 to make it to 500 000kms she died 15k short
While I take my time to decide whether or not to stick a new engine in it I stumbled across a fantastic offer on a 2001 D2 TD5 which I could not pass.
Its had one elderly owner from new, just clicked over 270k and its got the service history book with it.
My question today: what should I look out for on the TD5, what are they known for maintenance/issue wise, is there anything I should make sure its had done or any mods that need doing?
Just want a smooth ride while making a decision on the old D1.
Any pointers appreciated)
-- are they prone to overheat like the 300tdis? Do you guys put an engine saver in them also?
Thanks!!

Engine saver essential for whatever. Best insurance one off payment you'll ever make.

Like all cars they have there problems the fuel injection harness can leak oil to the ECU easy fix just get a new one I would put silicon intercoler hoses on as the rubber hoses aren't much good a proven is goodo remove oil from the intercooler. All this can be found on the good oil in more detail.
X2.
If it's an auto and still on its original transmission I would be putting some money aside for a rebuild. Around 250k seems to be a typical life.
Otherwise faults from my direct experience include, oil in ECU loom (as mentioned), fuel pressure regulator leaking and failures of front drive shaft DC joint, MAF sensor, ABS shuttle valve and/or sensors (the 3 amigos!), door lock activators and window regulators.
Also get a nanocom or similar diagnostic device. It will pay for itself in no time.
Cheers

from my experiences from owning my beloved D2 over 5 years
What to look for...
blocked EGR valve
hot universal joint linkages front and rear shafts (particularly the cardon joint)
check the manifold bolts, you will hear a loud wheezing whistle from the engine when you accelerate hard (after a wile the bolts closest to the firewall snap off, easy fix if you have the right tools)
slow electric windows (needs greasing)
electric door locks (mine needed replacing, started with drivers side first)
leaking tailgate door seals (no biggy)
check the wiring harness which feeds into the ECU for diesel as oil and fuel can make its way into the ECU when the engine is hot, also check the condition of the harness while your there.
check the air compressor and level sensors, make sure the level sensors move freely, (replace them on spec any ways for the sake of a cheap $150 bucks or so for insurance) if the level sensors fail the air springs could explode!
check the usual bushes, but yeah the pan hard bushes would most prolly need to be replaced (if you hear a random knock turning corners every now and then)
I had to replace the steering dampener, but that would be optional depending on the size of tyres you decide to run in the end?
there were a few more little issues (i cant remember atm) but nothing too major so yeah
im pretty convinced now the oil leaks on the driveway are normal lol
hope this helps mate,
best of luck
keep the services up to it mate
cheers!
