Thread: TD5 AirCon purging

Hi all,
I've had my aircon system looked at by a mobile aircon guy a couple of times in the last year, and each time it's down on gas. There have also been a about 2 or 3 occasions where I've had a sudden puff of acrid-smelling steam waft out of the engine bay, associated with a strange mechanical noise, which stops the moment I turn off the aircon. Aircon dude had put a green dye in the aircon fluid, and there is a definite green spray of fluid around the left hand side of the compressor, which the aircon guy reckons isn't his dye, and is probably coolant (which is bollocks because I've got red coolant).

Apart from needing to see a new aircon mechanic, any idea if this is going to be a compressor problem, or will the compressor be purging because of a problem elsewhere?

sounds like the compressor is overpressurising or you have a failing seal.

if you've had a hack guy have a go at it you could be looking at excessive oil in the compressor/system, excessive charge or a blockage, hopefully just the receiver drier.

if you're lucky ist just a seal that is holding at low to medium pressures but once the system pressure ramps up it vents.
