There is a welch plug behind the exhaust manifold - it is a screw in type and can leak around the threads - can be removed and thread sealant put on and replaced.
Went to look at a td5 today.
Low kms and very clean. Very stock also.
Was very clean underneath, looks like it's never been offroad but I Did notice a drop of engine oil which looked like it was coming out the bellhousing drain hole, so I was thinking possibly rear main however as new to td5's is there anything else back there that would also make it look like a rear main leak??
Also I noticed a coolant stain on the passenger side of the block, on a flat piece of the webbing near the bellhousing and I think this was dripping onto the exhaust as there were stains down that too. Nothing major but just trying to get a bit of an idea where it may be from. Should have got some pics or tried investigating further but was kind of limited for time :-(
Apart from those 2 things I was really impressed with the car.

Also fuel regulator leak will show up around the bell housing.

Often it is oil escaping from the rear of the sump gasket - particularly at the rear drivers corner. The oil migrates eventually between the gasket and the sump with age. This is a particular problem where a cheap gasket is used or the correct procedure is not used to seal the sump.
Check the maintenance record. If a new rear crank seal has been fitted then they normally drop the rear of the sump seal by a few mm to engage the lugs of the seal housing. The sump will not re-seal very well.

Sump may have been off to replace oil pump bolt.Another place to check is the 1/2 moon rubber plug which is part of the cam cover gasket on the rear of the motor.....may have been not sealed properly when replacing injector loom.
Water stain could also be from leak on the stumpy hose low down behind exhaust manifold connects oil cooler to a pipe that runs behind the head to the passenger side of the radiator.
To clarify an error my previous post - on replacing the rear crank seal, the lugs that need to engage with the bottom of rear crank seal housing are rubber lugs that are part of the sump gasket. They drop the sump to get the rear crank seal square onto the crankshaft boss.
The area where the sump gasket seal and the crank seal housing mate is required to be coated with sealant. If the sump is dropped slightly to get the new crank seal housing square on, then this sealant is also compromised.
