Replacing head unit on 2000 D2

    Hey all,

I realise there have been many threads on this already, but I'm struggling to find the information I need and a lot of the threads are not doing the same thing as me.

So, we have a 2000 Disco 2 with the stock head unit. The original radio still works fine (although the CD player is a little too dodgy for our liking; it may just be full of dust and dirt), but we're sick of either burning CDs or using expensive and unreliable radio transmitters. We've decided to finally get bluetooth USB and aux support.

After a bit of searching I've decided on the Pioneer DEH-X4850BT (which, as far as I can tell, is a 1din size head unit). I won't buy it just yet in case someone points out something I missed and tells me that model won't work with the D2.

What I need to know is... can I buy a 1.5din to 1din faceplate adapter of some sort? In other words, what do I need to do make it look nice with the new head unit installed?

Also: How does the wiring work? I've never replaced a head unit before. I'm not new to soldering and custom electrics in cars, but I've never played with car audio before. Is it plug-and-play replacement (i.e. is there a standard plug?), or do I need to cut and solder wires?

Any help and information you can provide me would be muchly appreciated

    Thanks!

Is this the unit with the integrated CD, or does it have the CD stack under the driver's seat?

Was starting to write something in more detail, but check out this thread. Should have everything you need.

You can buy a Pioneer to ISO link harness for about $15 from Repco or SCA or Autobahn or what-have-you, the ISO plug is a fairly standard plug across many models of car and luckily the D2 is one of those...

You can also buy little plastic inserts to cover up the 2 screws underneath where the new head unit will sit but they are about $80 or something ridiculous... I just left it uncovered it doesn't look too bad IMO...

Do you have steering wheel audio controls? If so then you'll need another patch lead as well as the ISO pioneer adaptor. Also the new stereo will need to have an swc input.

If not then it should be easy.

    Cheers

About to go to bed, but...

    - Integrated CD, no stacker.
    - How do I check for factory amp under the seat and why does it matter?
    - No steering wheel controls.

Thanks for the replies so far, will reply in more detail tomorrow

Look under your passenger seat and see if there is a black box with a crap ton of wires going to it.
I swapped out my head unit which had a factory amp under the seat, luckily the amp runs off the head units high level outputs so there isnt any special wiring.
One issue is the amp remote on wire on the is in a different spot between the aftermarket head unit and the car. So you need to swap it over.
The cars remote amp wire is in the spot of most aftermarket powered antenna position. So if you find you only get sound while your on radio, this is why.
