Who had practical experience on leaving the turbo heat shield off?

Removed the turbo heat shield off my disco td5 for access and decided to keep it off (ok, I also had to broke it off because the rear bolt was stuck.)

Many info on the web about it being needed... But also found a few 'success' stories of owners who kept it off.

    Thoughts?

Haven't had the turbo heat shield on for about 3 years. I like to be able to see what is going on on that side of the engine, regarding exhaust leaks, secret hose ,oil leaks etc. Don't know if it is a coincidence or not, haven't had an exhaust gasket leak in that time. Also took the top cover off the engine. Just an oil trap, if you ask me. When I service the engine, [TD5] I check the tension on the exhaust studs [ nearly always find one of the end nuts below tension] , and have a clear view of the rocker cover gasket, re oil leaks. Works for me.

Totally different beast. Heat shielding, and ceramic coating of the manifold & turbo are said to lower temperatures , and increase performance. The heat shield in question does none of that. I've had no problem with the washer tubing. I also monitor my engine temp, it hasn't changed. To each his own, I guess.

That article says that the heat shield (or turbo blanket) is more about helping the turbo staying hotter therefore it performs better. I don't care about that.

Now, sorry to be skeptical but I doubt you had the windshield tubing carbonized because I know how you like to do everything by the book so I doubt you have ever removed the heat shield

Maybe I'm being skeptical as well but putting a smiley at the end of a sentence doesn't counter for saying someone is lying, fwiw some of us on here are interested in efficiency and getting the best from something. The standard heat shield while not perfect does do a better job of keeping the heat away from hoses, a/c pipes, wiring , extra batteries etc than nothing.

Think about that for a minute. What is the heat shield made of? Do you think it may transfer heat ?. I'll leave it at that.

Whilst I shall not get into the yes or no of having said shield fitted, In general a heat shield is more an interceptor of heat transfer than a total blocker of heat transfer. They intercept and channel or redistribute heat. In general the outside of a shield, but not the shield itself, will be quite a few degrees difference than without.

To answer your questions , it appears to be made of a double layer of reflective alloyed metal filled with some type of powdered ceramic.
Yes it will transfer heat ... as I said earlier , its not perfect but better than nothing. And to think of all the heat shielding on all the modern stuff these days , those silly car companies must love wasting money on all that unnecessary heat deflection

Have to admit, definitely food for thought , and does make sense. What I intend to do, for my own peace of mind, is connect one of the sensors of my well tempered heat sensor to the general area [ not sure where yet], replace my heat shield, do a few good runs, remove heat shield, a few more good runs, then compare the temps. As stated, I've had the shield off for about 3 years, with no obvious ill effects. it will be interesting.
