Get a second hand set from the wreckers. Nothing Autobarn, Super Cheap ect sell is better than Harmon Kardon.
Anyone managed to fit a set of decent aftermarket speakers in the factory front door locations of the three piece Harmon Kardon speakers? My passenger side seems to have a damaged driver as there is some distortion from one of them, so I'm considering replacement options.

I replaced one of the small door speakers form a D2 with the standard sound system. Same physical size etc, however the wires on the plug are in a different position. From memory, it's a three pin plug and the HK speaker uses pins 1 & 2, and the standard system uses 1 & 3 (or similar).
It's not too hard to sort this out though.
Not sure on how true that is.
The HK offerings in the Land Rovers are built on a budget. It's not HK's actual top line good stuff - it's mass produced for a large number of vehicles.
Also anything second hand is now a minimum of 12 years old (that's assuming it's a 2004 last D2a ever made) - they deteriorate.
Anyone know what the wiring configuration is on the front doors to the amp?
i.e. are the three speakers all running off a single amp channel or is it two channels - one for the tweeter and midrange and one for the woofer? If it's one channel then a set of 3 way splits would be the go but if two channel I can just replace the tweeter and midrange with two way splits which are more price convenient.

The wiring diagram of the High Line system from pp 124 - 127 show that it is an eight channel amplifier and the front doors consist of one channel driving the high and mid range and a second channel driving the woofers. So a replacement 4" split component setup would be the go.
Great speakers yes, but I'm not sure that they are a good choice for this application if the factory amplifier is retained for a few reasons:
1. your running some great speakers off a mediocre amp - I don't think you'd be getting value for your money in that situation as you won't be getting the full benefit of the quality of the speakers - better off spending money on a better amp.
2. Noting the above post detailing the wiring setup of the amp the lower woofer is on a seperate channel. If you fit 3 way split component speakers your only using one channel to drive three speakers instead of two channels to drive the three. I doubt the factor amp is bridgeable.
