SupporterI reckon it's not too long past a few seconds after you first turn the key to start 'er up!
Half way on the drive home from collecting your first ... you're already a mid term apprentice .. trying to figure out what all the noises and warning lights mean.
After the ongoing diagnosis on the initial drive home, first thing you do when you get home, is think back to where you stored all those tools that you haven't used for years on any vehicle you're ever owned .. then you're on the internet to find sources for all the goofy tools you need just to do simple things like change the oil filter.
Once the realisation hits that all that oil, steam, smoke and odour of burning petrochemical products isn't normal, within seconds you're googling for the various bits of info necessary to minimise all those problems ... and by that stage you're a fully qualified mechanic.
A few weeks later you realise that the cheapest way to keep the one you just bought alive, is to purchase someone unfortunate vehicle as the parts car, and before you get out of your car to see the parts car for sale, you've already identified 90% of the issues with the parts car you're about to buy and strip.
At this stage, you've reached the same level of knowledge and understanding as the team leaders of Engineering, Product Design, and Durability Testing at Land Rover.

I finally replaced the window regulator!! I also lifted the Bailey channel? and sikaflexed that in place. All that annoying wind noise has gone.
The window regulator took a while to sort out. I lost the wave washer, CBC would sell me one for $7.50 so I went to the factory (China Ebay) and bought 20 for $3.00.

SupporterFinally got some work done on 'Ginger'(the sexy redhead).
She's been sitting in my driveway since about Jan an '00 model V8, that fell into my lap for a price I couldn't say no too.
A few parts cannibalised by the previous owner, so a sad, blue parts car was found to make up the shortfall.
Some missing parts were installed over a long period between Jan and now .. but been so long I can't remember what and when.
A/C compressor missing, sad blue had a nice working A/C system .. swap done.
So now with the motor back together in Ginger, start 'er up and she's rough. Pulled the throttle body, clean out with TB cleaner .. runs nicer.
She definitely needs a service, and a good set of plug leads.
A previous owner(or whoever!!) has done what has to be one of the biggest bodge jobs I've yet seen with a lead.
I think it's #3 cyl, but it has one lead coming from the coil pack, looks too short to go fully to the plug, so they piggy backed a short plug lead on to the too short plug lead and onto the plug for #3!
While I love the good ol Aussie outback patch'er up spirit as much as the next bloke .. that's a short plug lead too far me thinks .. so a new set of leads as well as service will be required.
What happened today(actually Thursday, but finished the job today)
Could have been the genius that did the plug lead on plug lead job too .. but someone had lock tightened the fan onto the pump spindle. That's the only explanation I can think of as to why there was no way the fan was going to come off the pump.
Bent my (proper) fan removing C spanner multiple times trying to remove it. Bar used to lock the fan pulley, C spanner on, heavy taps with a 5lb sledge .. nothing. Large bar added to the other end of the C spanner .. and the only thing that moved was the 36mm end of the C spanner bending out to about 38-40mm instead.
Note I have no need for a 38-40mm C spanner, so much time was wasted continuously heating C-spanner and bashing it back to the correct. Tried about 3 times, heating c-spanner to close it up again, only for it to open up again. I was sure that at some point the fan's nut should have cracked .. nup!
I partially gave up for the day other than to spend the last half hour hacking off the fan's blades.
The reason for all this torture was to replace the grindy, and slightly leaky P/S pump with the one I had rebuilt out of Sad Blue, now stripped bare just in time for the cold weather too.
So a new water pump was got yesterday, viscous unit from blue is new, fan is good, so no issue for parts.
All fitted up today other than the multiple thousand cuts and contusions suffered trying to remove the old water pump with the centre of the fan and the viscous and pulley still blocking most access to the water pump bolts.
While all those parts and pieces were off to replace the P/S pump, I also gave the engine a degrease and a rinse.
Of course wen we went to start up Ginger, she refused to start. I sprayed some stuff into the throttle body, but nothing.
Brother commented maybe it's too low of fuel .. as always he's wrong .. but of course to rub salt into my now many open wounds .. this time he was right.
Fuel now got, and emptied into Ginger's tank .. she started beautifully .. no red leaks super sexy and smooth steering feel(ie. no more protesting moaning noises) and I just had to go around the block in her(even tho she's not registered .. I live in a very quiet block
The old water pump still with fan centre, pulley viscous and one long bolt unable to be extracted was thrown by the wayside.
Ginger was idled for a good hour or so to get to operating temp, do bleed the cooling system a bit.
Went to retrieve the old pump to place it on the grave site that is Sad Blue, and a small thing fell out of it.
Inside the outlet pipe(to the thermostat) was a red restrictor looking thingy. (I'll get a photo of it tomorrow).
Never seen anything like it, and surely this plastic pipe restrictor thingy would only serve to allow the engine to overheat?
The restrictor thing is basically a pipe with a flange. The flange is the same diameter as the inside of the waterpump outlet pipe. The inner diameter of the resultant tube is about 15-ish mm or less.
ie. barely 1/4 of the outflow of the water pump would actually get through to the thermostat.
Anyhow, if anyone knows of any plastic restrictor looking thingy that is supposed to be inserted into the waterpump out flow pipe On a D2 V8 .. now would be a good time to reveal such info.
End result: engine is very nice, smooth. After about an hour of idling, temp needle rose to just over half, cooling bled, water topped up, bled again .. and then I went around the block.
Heater was a very luke cold. Went to bleed the cooling system again, carefully removed expansion tank cap, water bubbled out under pressure as expected .. but close to stone cold .. or maybe better described as a very luke cold. You wouldn't call it warm.
Maybe the restrictor was there for a reason? Thermostat is in place, no idea on what temp rating it is tho.
Heater air temp felt about the same as the coolant temp over my hand when it bubbled out of the tank too .. so I'm sure that heater pipes are not blocked and purged of air with the bleeding.
.. anyhow, apart from all that, shes getting close to going in for her roadworthy checkup soon.
5 new tyres(possibly next Thursday), and a VicRoads permit later, and she'll be on her way to the RWC tester.

This sums up my day. It's times like these I'm glad I have total care, 7 hours trip home.
Cheers, David.

First trip out in a long time, and the lower radiator hose split, the only one I did not have in my spares. It happened over the back of Mt Stirling on the way to Craig's hut. They couldn't get a replacement in Mansfield so towed home. Not a great end to the weekend.
Cheers, David.
