Head Lining Out and a finish on the horizon

Pretty painless removing the old headlining, scrubbed and jet washed will be refurbing and fitting tomorrow. Whilst it is out,
    • new aerial for the Alpine - boosted for both the DAB and AM/FM and works better than the window fitting DAB by a long way -
    • rear camera fitted to the underside of the Upper brake light wired to the front with a Toguard 12" display, able to wiped 'clean' by rear wiper
    • USB power from the sunshield light attachment and relocated the EWP Controller to make it easier to see.
    • Removed the two rearmost seat belts and headrests as never to run back seats again.

The sunroof drain above the drivers head was broken (other 3 where fine) and hence why the previous owner would have siliconed around the sunroof. Going to cut back the rubber and use the soldering iron to weld the bit back on and follow off with epoxy and fly wire

    To finish off going to do a couple more things tomorrow;
    • Run the Electric Brake Controller and mount it with the EWPC and Toguard Mirror
    • Fitting the 315Mhz key controller as well to go with the SLS lowering PLIP from the US.
    • Mounting the twin Engine guard up high with the EWPC etc.
    • Fitting an electric water pump spout to just behind the back door for when I install the water tank.
    • Run cameras for the Alpine unit which is two front mounted either side and rear reversing camera mounted just above the tow ball.

So the way I look at it now, after this will just be some cosmetic issues such as the handbrake and low range surrounds, fitting the upright fridge and Air Compressor while as I wait and see what happens with the 8 speed ZF. If that doesn't become available then will get the HD V8 torque convertor finally done and look forward to the next big trip.

Finally have up trying to get me D2a rest pillar lights, mine had so many cracks it was only a matter of time before they fell apart, so I've fitted the plug for the old style onto the loom and put orange gloves into the reverse section. Also fitted an led light cluster into the rear bar to replace the original bumper lights, anyone said they don't see me indicating should not be driving20220701_141608.mp4

Did you jump on board with the mob building the Td5/8HP adaptor?
    Cheers

    Yes Slunnie the very one,

BMW N57 8hp to TD5 Auto adapter kit – Deposit | Online Gearbox Parts Shop

Missed the cut off date for the deposit which was about 3 weeks ago and have asked questions as to the mounts and cooler lines etc. which I am waiting on the answers for. The way I see it, the TD5 will last but the 4HP is the weak point for longevity and I don't want to get rid of the D2 for a long time it ticks too many boxes for me.

As far as I can ascertain the 8HP is much more robust than the 6 and of course basically no torque limit as far as the TD5 is concerned, gee could even turn up the boost without getting Mario and Stan flashing me when accelerating, well they could but they wont be putting the auto into third and keeping it there till turning off and back on again!

Headlining done! Sunroof repair of excellence.

Installed the 315Mhz receiver and hooked up the keys via Nanocom, the lowering works very well and is pretty quick as well

Had a few little issues with the covering and the job is only about 90% if I am honest but no hanging roof lining is a blessing. The foam surround for the rear aircon ducts was totally disintegrated and as this is not a people carrier have not replaced them but the ducts don't sit proper. The actual job of replacing the headlining was not as daunting as first thought and a bit more care when contact adhesive is applied and stretching out and pressure from the middle to the edge.

The sunroof repair of the driver drain I am more than pleased with. Took out the corner and as there was not quite enough to weld we went a different tack and one I would recommend for the ease and integrity of the repair.

The pics are not available but basically we drilled out the hole to push through some copper pipe with a flange from the inside out of the corner unit, about an 1" or so and then siliconed in the corner again and attached the pipe to the copper and a bit more silicon to be sure. Had to flatten part of the flange as the roundness of the flange would not sit in the corner at the base of the insert, the whole repair was only about 10 minutes or so. Will try and repair the pictures if I can.

That’s fascinating. Anymore links explaining shifting mechanisms, connection and computer items?

Just a bit of light reading regarding the ZF 8 speed as used in the Discovery 4 - Why ZF's Eight-Speed Is the Best Automatic Transmission - the 6 speed in the Disco 3 has not been so well revered.

The controller it appears would be coming from HTG, a Polish firm which allows for programming of the unit etc, the shifting mech from BMW as per the youtube vid - HTG GCU Gearbox Control Unit - ZF 8HP70 automatic mode, sequential shifting, standalone - YouTube - again I have sent questions to HTG as to the controller. So the sport function is controlled via the stick and I suppose that a tip shift mech for the wheel could be adapted by the variety of users of the 8HP but I don't see much need for function myself.

That said, logically the 'stick' from the D4, "rise auto changer", or other manufacturers sticks could also be used.

Back on the post that this originated from, did an Ashcroft Ratio Calculation with 6 of the 8 speeds substituted in (missed a couple in the middle for expediency) and with the 4.37 diffs I have and 32"s the low ratio was down around 68:1 or so and in top gear it worked out at 2300rpm for 100kph cruise against 2600rpm currently so with standard gearing it would be around 2000rpm but still viable.

    Ratio Calculator with 8HF and 437 diffs 32 tyres.pdf

The prices I looked at for the 8 speed turned out to only be about the $2K mark (reliable and not much demand for replacement and such a lot of them around) the HTG controller at $2.5K and if the adaptor kits is available then these at around $2K. This is less than the cost of rebuilding the ZF4HP although sure there are other issues as to what else is required but surely represents a reason for investigating.

Early adopting is not a problem for me, maybe we should be looking at a GROUP BUY for both the adaptor and the Programmer????????????????????????????????

Pretty happy with the TD5, AMC Turner head and Darkside Manifold and Garret VNT even with the wick not turned up completely, it goes well, very well and with just on 260K's it is nearly run in. The M57 would likely double the price of the upgrade and yes the engine is worth it, but the commitment to price does not work out for me.

That said would rather get an upgraded transfer box with the heavy duty Ashcroft internals, ATB and 1.1 well before changing engines, with an already fully upgraded drive train the impost value of the M57????, well if the engine blows some time in the future, absolutely.
