I had my air box lid break today, lost a heap of power on the drive home, was a slug until it came on boost.

Had a look over a few things before I checked the air box and found the crack, just near the clip next to the MAF sensor, It had been repaired there before so I'm thinking the someone had missed the clip when changing the air filter.

I also removed a piece of thick scotchbrite type material that was wedged in the inner guard air intake, it didn't look very factory and was caked in mud, seems to breath a lot better now, and didn't struggle up the hills near home.

Now just need to find a replacement air box lid.

Note that there are two types. The issue with either/or of the two types is the AAP (ambient air pressure) sensor.

I currently have an EU3 TD5, with a half baked lid, and got myself a replacement cover for it. But found that the APP is different .. so it don't fit.

So, I have a spare cover in good cond(minus the AAP sensor I think).
I'll have to fish it out of wherever I stored it, I'll try to get a photo of the two different types and see if we can match yours up to either of them.

And the Disco is on blocks again

My son had been driving it in the city for a few weeks and complaining about a bad vibration/rattle, I thought it might be the hand brake shoes.. turned out to be a failing cardan shaft (barely 2 years old, greaseable type as well) it took out the rear section of the auto trans, punching the whole assembly backwards, haven't removed it yet so not sure if the transfer case is ok or not, but fingers crossed.

I have managed to source a V8 trans and converter plus a cooked TD5 auto, the V8 trans is supposed to be ok but I'll get a rebuild kit put through it (or at least steels and frictions) and have the out put shaft changed over. While I'm there it will get the V8 torque converter as well.
I'm also planning on the transfer case being rebuilt, sump gasket renewed and the fuel pressure reg kited. Still deciding what to do about the front shaft, don't really feel like spending big $$$ also not happy with the lesser shafts, might see a driveline mob and see if they can fit a HD cardan to the current shaft.

Also looking on Ashcrofts site they say to have a tune if running the V8 converter, has anyone done this? (rest of motor/driveline stock)

So the Disco will be enjoying a fair chunk of the summer in the shed (hopefully nothing else will break while parked up...)

    Get a Tom Woods Shaft.
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

Cheers mate, that would be awesome if you could, I've ordered a Q-bond plastic repair kit to fix mine, and hopefully it should come up ok.

Mine did many things out of pique. The locking system comes to mind. Do you have a Nanocom? If not, now might be the time to consider getting one.

    8 Speed ZF Adaptor

MMMmmmmm, went to the website (they have not answered 4 emails now) and it appears that they have made the adaptor plates for the TD5, however, they are sold out....

BMW N57 8hp to TD5 Auto adapter kit | Online Gearbox Parts Shop

It still states deposit but this previously only had a cad pic on the site, now it shows the actual unit and it being attached the box. So a positive that they are producing the part and available at some time soon. Wont be ready for the Christmas trip to the high country but hopefully by next year it will.

Have they managed to control the 8HP behind the Td5 yet? Hopefully the development work is done before you get to it.
    Cheers

My blue girl has never ever overheated the engine in the 21 years since I bought it. This morning, no problems. This afternoon I saw the temp gauge was up a bit in the traffic (ok it was in Orange, so traffic here may not be the same as traffic as everybody else knows it ) When I got moving the motor reduced power and then when the needle moved to hot it cut all power and would only idle. I idled around the corner and let it cool off. It had oil and water. When it cooled off, I did the same process again just 2 secs down the road as in it drove, warmed up, reduced power and then I was at my works driveway.

Has anyone seen or heard of this before? I wondered if the thermostat had possibly jammed???
    Cheers

It's odd that it still had water/coolant, I've never seen one get that hot without blowing it all out, although it's usually a head gasket that has caused it.

The ECU will cut power when the engine gets to a certain temp, so that's what that is about, I can't remember what the temp is, but from memory it's a scaled reduction in IQ amounts... So not sure why it would only idle, might be a setting I'm not aware of, which is entirely possible.

You might be in strife from the temp though unfortunately.
