Yep no brake lights will disable cruise control. I had the same problem when the brake light fuse blew a few years ago. As to why it may be just one of the things but if it blows again start digging a bit deeper.
Cheers
Steve
driving home today the cruise decided not to work upon investigation I found f4 under the bonnet (washer) and f25 under dash (stop light ) blown replaced these and its all working .....any ideas ?

A water logged horn can blow the horn fuse and then the cruse control doesn't work either, I assume it somehow disables the steering wheel buttons. This happened on my 2003 TD5.

Ok so it did it again today headed to Melbourne on the way home about 20 ks out happily cruising at 100kmh and all of a sudden the cruise disconnected when it does it an alarm chimes but no lights on the dash so I am thinking it is between the fuse box and the brake light switch

It could be there or plenty of other places. Doubtless you've checked the fuses again which will give you a clue. Did you apply the brakes, use the indicators, or do anything immediately before or did it just happen?
Going deeper other areas to look at are oil in the ECU loom, at the red plug on the ECU ( if you have a td5), this caused me problems with cruise control actuation in times past. When my brake light fuse blew it only happened with a trailer attached and the problem was eventually traced to the wiring to the 7 pin plug.
Cheers
Steve
That's exactly the same as you have said both times with the trailer attached and today I replaced the fuse and it blew straight away I will try without the trailer tomorrow and check the trailer plug although I had ruled that out as I hadn't hit the brake pedal

If it is trailer related also check the electric brake controller wiring (if fitted) and the trailer wiring as well.
Cheers
Steve
Ken, Check your trailer wiring, one of your moo cows might have eaten some wiring.
