The alternator is a Nippon Denso and takes the same brushes and regulator as Toyotas so parts should be simple to find.
Mine died from oil gunging up the brushes and that is what it sounds like.

Hi Guys,
Need some advice.
On a trip and D2 Td5 Auto has been rock solid for 4500 kms over last few weeks. Today the battery light suddenly lit up and has stayed on. Battery showed 12.7 volts with engine off. Start engine and dropped to 12.3 volts. All main connections etc are tight. Had done 15 kms of wet corrugated road about 15 minutes before the light came on.
Managed to go 50 kms into Rockhampton, so at least not stuck in middle of nowhere. Battery now down to 12.0 volts.
I am assuming the alternator has died but any thoughts gratefully received.
I have a multi meter with me but no nanocom.
Cheers, Charlie

Thanks Phillip, should also mention that brake lights work so not the brake light fuse blowing and stopping alternator from charging.
Double check the fuse link in the engine bay fuse box is tight and not blown, along with the alternator cable connection at the fuse box. Not sure what connection is on the alternator but if it's a plug and stopped charging after corrugations it may have come loose.
This is between the alternator and battery.

X2 brush pack quick and cheap.
Thanks Kelvo, will check those connections in morning.
Failing that it is probably brush pack, so will see whether to get fixed locally or source new alternator.
Thanks, Charlie
Temp fix that might work is to pull the back off the alternator and clean everything as much as you can then put back together. This worked when mine did the same as you described.
Hi Charlie.
Some times the carbon dust from the brushes can jam the brush deep into it's holder. If that's the case, cleaning them will allow the brushes to pop up more, this might give you a few 1,000 kms more driving.

G'day Charlie,
I have a Nanocom and live in Rockhampton - let me know if you need to use it.
PS ... I am off to Brisvegas this afternoon (Monday) so you will need to chase me up in the morning send me a PM with your contact details if you need to.
Cheers
Cloughy
Thanks Cloughy that is super generous but not required at the moment.
Tested Alt this morning and zero output - it is rooted after 341,000kms - can't really complain about that.
Have ordered replacement from Mario and taking lazy option of getting Landy specialist in Rocky to fit.
Cheers, Charlie
