Rattling noise 2500RPM Disco2

Oh wow thanks for the responses guys. That tech article is great. Exactly what i needed. Hopefully its within my skills to do so. Would i need to jack it up to get access to that part? Since i dont have a handbrake effectively ill chock up the wheels and see what i find. I doubt that by me attempting to fix this would make my handbrake work again so perhaps its best to give it to the mechanics. A little hesitant to give it to the rover mech locally though goven their reputation for gouging on price.

Depends if you're skinny like me LOL. You should be able to get under there though.
If you need someone to talk you through it, send a PM to Blknight. He knows pretty much all there is to know about LR's I think and he's always more than happy to help out on the phone.
That said, its a pretty simple job really, get under with a couple of spanners and see how you go.

Haha yeah im tall but not wide so should be right getting under there. No worries ill shoot him a pm and go from there. See of he can explain it to me. Ive got to print out that pdf and understand what ill be doing then ill give it a crack

Have a look on YouTube, there is a good video on adjusting the Discovery handbrake.
Makes it quite easy when you have watched someone else do it. My handbrake used to come all the way up before i adjusted it now it's a couple of clicks.

Thats awesome i just watched it. Ill try that first and see how it goes.

When i engage the handbrake while driving it removes the rattling noise completely but i can still drive. So it clearly needs adjusting :)

If the rattle does not go away completely when you adjust the hand brake you may have to do the mod re the tech bulletin and or have the wear points on the back plate filled with weld and smoothed.

Well i pretty mich drive around with the handbrake engaged at the moment and has nearly stopped the rattling. I removed the window control panel and went to adjust it but mine has the cable and a rubber plug that i cannot remove. Tried with various pliers but dosent look that i can adjust it the same way as the guy can in the video. Or should i just hack out the plug and see if that adjustment nut is definitely there?

You probably don't have an adjuster on the cable with your year. Adjust it by the adjuster at the back of the handbrake back plate (17mm?). Tighten until you feel the shoes tighten on the drum and back off a bit so the drum is free of resistance.

After trying for ages to find this increasing rattle, by using some rubber hose to my ear to drown out the d2 din I found the culprit!

Steve was right it was the rectangular counterweight attached to the handbrake drum was loose, and with the engine idling i tightened the 15mm bolt and blissful silence.
I had previously looked at the turbo guard, bell housing steel plates, diff ends steel brake plates and did a full inspection but the 25mm rubber hose found the culprit.
