You can get the rails sitting just off the roof (about 1.5cm is enough for a little bowing)

Cool, this sounds like a good setup. No use getting the X bars if they're not needed right? What's the weight rating on your legs and basket?

From the Rhino Rack website 100Kg load rating.

Pioneer Platform RL280S4 Roof Rack | Rhino-Rack the price is for the platform, 3 pairs of legs and 3 pairs of leg spacers. You should be able to negotiate at least a 20% discount on that price

They only do the Pioneer Platforms in black now, when they first came out you could only get them in silver.

The RL280 legs are just the right height to strap Maxtrax to as well.

Just found this, a full length steel roof rack with suitable feet for discovery. $350 odd. I wonder...

Evilbay, 11" legs and bars across fit very well and were $97.

Suits me, they are square bars so no shaping into the wind but plastic coated and work well.

Another way of doing it ................... my old D2 had a pair of tracks on the back section of the roof, with a single ROLA cross rail mounted on the tracks. It was adjustable (could be moved forward / rearward) as were a couple of "tie downs" that were also mounted in the tracks. There were two more ROLA cross rails mounted between the original Disco front roof rails. I liked the look of this system, as there were no "legs" going down into the gutters.

I carried some pretty heavy loads on these rails over the years with never any problems. You could mount a basked directly to these rails if required.

The only thing that ended up being a bit of a problem with this set-up was that it was very difficult (if not impossible) to hang an awning off it. I ended up fitting two Rhino legs adjacent to the front and rear ROLA cross rails, and making up steel "braces" which bolted from the top of the Rhino legs to the ROLA rails, and hung an awning off this arrangement.
