    You're correct in that they're not the same (too long since owing a D2) but only 1 of the valves per wheel stays closed as the other is normally open and only closed to cut pressure to the wheel. Still, the ABS pump circulates fluid through the pump which is not done with a pedal or external pressure bleed.
