    Serviced the D2 yesterday

    I did an oil change on the D2TD5 2002 yesterday at 179KK.

    I thought I would check all the pulleys , clean the boost sensor, and look at the EGR valve to see whether it needed cleaning.

    The EGR. I took the hose off and had a look and feel inside the valve. There was very little /no coke build up since I last cleaned it at 135KK, so I just gave it a quick wipe out. This compared to when I first cleaned it at 135Kk when there was thick coke all over the place.
    My conclusion is that using full synthetic oil ( Nulon5W30 ) and a new manifold depression valve reduce the build up to negligible levels.

    I see no need to delete the EGR even though I have a kit.
    The Boost sensor was also just covered in a thin coat of oil and just needed a quick spray.

    I removed the belt to check it after 50KK and it was fine. I spun the various idlers and pulleys ( new 50Kk ago) and all look good and the harmonic balancer feels good . The VC bearing spins freely but tinkles a bit so I will replace it.

    Question, do the OEM ERR5285 have a neoprene seal or steel seal as it occurs to me that I could get my grease needle and stick some grease in.

    I also dismantled the ECU plugs and all are clean after 3 years so it looks like the later injection harnesses are better at keeping out oil.

    Fuel cooler and FPR no leaks after 3 years !!! Is this a record?

    The only leak I have at the moment is that darned reservoir at the back of the sump.
    I have added a magnet to the oil drain plug and it had virtually no steel particles on it after 7KK. I didn't even wipe it. This compares to my 3.9 which always had lots of whiskers on every oil change.

    I must be living on borrowed time but I have only ever had 1 3 amigos and it was just a dirty connector on the RH rear.

    I have never had any other faults recorded except on the first day of purchase when the battery terminal came loose driving it home and everything lit up. A Nanocom must be like an umbrella, If you have one you don't need it.

    The reason people delete the Egr is mainly to stop your exhaust gas`s going back into your motor as well as all that other crap , Plus they do stuff up.
    I`ve had 2 Td5`s with perfectly good Egr`s that i took off and threw away and very happy for it , Stick with it if you want your motor will be better off in the long term with out it . Your not reinventing the wheel you know

    TO EGR remove or not to EGR Remove?

    I've noticed on my car, that the actuators that receive an electrical signal and then open the vacuum lines are gone. So the EGR and EGR throttle do not work.

    Good that your getting a good run Philip , would suggest if you want to grease the fan bearing , then pull it out , pop the seal off , wash and inspect it , then repack if OK and replace the seal ( don't mix grease) put it in the freezer in a bag overnight, heat the bearing recess with a heat gun , then drop in the bearing .

    The egr valves can leak , letting some exhaust gas in , as well as being a minor restriction.

    Regarding the EGR, I have left mine in place even though I have a kit, because of the hassle if I break a bolt on the exhaust manifold. Then I would have to remove a non leaking manifold to fix it which would be a PITA.

    Maybe I will do it when and if the manifold starts to leak but really I doubt removal will change performance much. Boost is measured AFTER the EGR so the ECU is compensating for any restriction. The turbo has excess capacity hence the wastegate , which measures boost from the boost sensor. All that should happen is that the wastegate will open sooner if restriction is removed.

    My experience with petrol turbos suggests that exhaust dump pipe mods will give the most gain and at low revs for increased spool up.

    We better get used to EGR as the Ingenium has a very complex looking EGR setup and LR will no doubt make it harder and harder to disable..

    Given that I have a tinkle with the VC bearing, I will replace it.
