    TD5 Performance upgrades

    Hi Guys,

Just joined the forum and wanted to discuss performance upgrades to my 2004 Td5 manual as its a little laggy when driven around the city, i.e low revs.

I was considering an exhaust and CPU upgrade / flash tune. Except, like everything, you hear good and bad things..

Exhaust, i was told very similar results can be achieved with a de-cat, does anyone know if this is a worthwhile mod or is it worth replacing the full system?

ECU - what is the difference between all of these, such as a remap, flash tune etc etc. Do they need to be tuned on a dyno or is a 'generic' tunic still beneficial? some people say its just the computer dumping more diesel into the cylinders which apparently isn't great. Some say internal temps can get too high?
Are these legit problems and are there ways around them?
Are the benefits noticeable or significant?

I've looked into Davis Landys performance, Roo systems or Graeme cooper, any help or advice appreciated.

Intercoolers - doubt i'll get to this level of modification unless its all works so well together.

Get a remap done via a company that knows TD5s. Search on this forum for which ones are recommended. Some give discount if you are an aulro forum member. You can get the new map loaded via a Nanocom. This site also has a list on who has them and are willing to assist.

I had my 2000 Td5 manual re-chipped and installed a larger intercooler (and used silicone hoses). I also blanked the EGR. I did not alter the exhaust.

While not making things fantastic at low revs it certainly improved the situation.

You should be able to 'flash' your ECU but mine had to re-chipped manually. I had that done, and also purchased the new intercooler, through Triumph Rover Spares in Adelaide. Enjoy
    Cheers, Dale

    You've heard the old expression
"measure twice and cut once" ?
well, read all the info on here(which will take some time--) but spend once.

    heres one from left field,,
twr7cx has finished the engine and moved on to other components,, must be happy with the final product.

Btw: your 2004 D2a has a larger intercooler compared to the D2. So ensure that your performance improvements are limited by the intercooler before getting a bigger one.

Personally I am of the opinion that a larger intercooler is beneficial even on a stock setup - the largest aftermarket intercooler available is still not very big as our Australian delivered D2 TD5's have the automatic transmission cooler in the way for the full length units. You just wind up the water gate actuator rod length to compensate for the drop in boost pressure due to the larger volume. The colder air is better for the engines performance - it wouldn't be my first mod though in the scheme of things.

I'd highly recommend as it means that you get ongoing aftersale service for what you've been sold.

If you want to do it right , first off remove the exhaust manifold , replace the studs , modify the manifold ( plenty posts re this but I normally de web and drill out all the stud holes to 10 mm except the central ones on cyl 3 ) , while your exhaust is off , remove the cat or replace with a hi flow , you can also delete the centre muffler and replace with a hot dog , leave the resonator on. Delete egr , then buy yourself a nanocom and upload the map to tuner ( I usually use td5 inside , no complaints at all ) , see how you go with this , pretty sure you'll love it , but if you want more its there to be had , just keep in mind if its in the above state of tune the car is going to stay reliable, you really should check everything else is good first ( maf , map, aap sensors, cam timing , injector bump clearance etc. Also bring your boost up to 1.3 bar, do this by shortening the wastegate rod

    thanks Discorevy.

I've had it go on the dyno in stock trim and have 55kw which I understand is normal.

Do you have any recommendations for all of the above work? i.e. workshops in Sydney?
Are there risks with internal engine temps?

My main focus is to keep reliability, whilst improving lag and response particularly when towing / using air con!
