That's bull, when you post something at the post office you tell the person behind the counter you want to insure it, they take the small fee and Aus post will then insure it . The seller doesn't have do anything really except ask for it to be insured.
The seller should have packed it sufficiently to protect the item from damage. You can't send something in the mail and then say bad luck to the buyer and say it's not his responsibility. The seller should take reasonable steps to package it correctly.
We have never told a customer bad luck if something arrived damaged that we posted.
That's like a seller sending a light bulb in a satchel and when it arrives at the other end it is broken and then saying it's not their problem.
You have to remember also your mail goes through the postal system along with other items. Items like 18 kg brake rotors etc, it doesn't take much for a 18 kg brake rotor to crush a little light bulb if it wasn't packaged correctly.
What did the seller have to say about it?
