Noise from the front end. Diff, TC or G/B?

Son in law has a humming noise from the front of his D2. Audible in 3rd gear to 5th. Push the clutch in, noise goes away. Any ideas would be appreciated.Cheers.
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

The only things I can thing of are:

Spigot bush might be spinning in the crank.

The thrust bearing is making slight contact when clutch is disengaged and is spinning the bearing.

I'm guessing replacing the clutch fluid and bleeding might help if it is the latter.

If you pull it to bits and you find the brass spigot bush just drops out, might have been the first. If this is the case make sure you soak the new bush in oil (NOT GREASE) before installing.

Having said all that I guess it could be the diff, tried replacing the oil?

I don't think it would be the double cardan joint in the front prop shaft as from memory this make noise when you back off, but worth checking as it can let go in a big way. (The noise this makes has been described as chirping before)

    Hope that helps. Good luck.
