No cam repairs. Furphy. And cool running brings D2 V8 into D1 V8 territory I reckon. D1 V8's just go and go. Cheers

My old boys D2 had all the lifters and the cam replaced due to premature cam lobe wear. Brand new. Under 100k

They all wear Cam lobes, they all do lifters in...
And they all do head gaskets, coolers, leak oil like the Deep Water Horizon and consume about the same in ULP Please not a head gasket? TD5 D2aPlease not a head gasket? TD5 D2a

The engine doesn't even get close to the old 1hp per cube guide.. Please not a head gasket? TD5 D2a only 86%; TD5 goes 89%. Please not a head gasket? TD5 D2a

Yes AMC. Fitted a couple of years back after fuel went in the oil in a big way on the old head. Went up over an inch in 200kms

That would be the first AMC head failure I've heard of ever if it's failed. Fingers crossed for you mate!

I have finally gotten around to getting the head off. There was no obvious break in the 4 layered head gasket.

There is a buildup of caked dried coolant coloured stuff on the top of # 2&3 cylinders - a clear sign of the leak being around there.

Do you think the head will be reusable/repairable/skimmed?

I will be watching with interest as I also have an AMC head about 4 years old with intermittent coolant system issues of late. I've had nil overheating however.

I also had an engine saver that failed to alarm after substantial coolant loss from driving with a pinhole leak in top rad hose from rubbing the aircon pump. Strangely it only alarmed after I had stopped for Maccas and it had sat for 30 mins or so.

Must be the season for it...

2002 Td5 with AMC head fitted about 5 years ago suddenly started losing coolant this week. Daughter was driving and the temp alarm went off on the Madman at 105C. Pulled over and parked. When cold i was able to put 2L of fluid in and I drove about 10k home. Temp rose to 96C by the time I got home - it normally sits solid on 88-90 and when I checked this morning had clearly lost a lot more.

Will look for a leak this weekend but a cursory glance couldn't spot anything.
No pressure in the cooling system when cold, no white smoke.

And happily no it's not a head gasket. I found a leak in the top radiator hose today. It was under the bleed screw and had rubbed on a sharp edge on the engine.

Wonderful service from Roverlord on New Years Day who responded immediately to a PM and I picked up the part - improved design to fix the dodgy bleed screw - and installed easily.
