Well gang, I just like to say a very big thank you to all who offered their wisdom & time to help me with my problems.
So today I pulled all silicon hoses to inspect & sure enough they are all Mickey Mouse.
What I did find while working was that the hose at the base of the Waste Gate Modulator was longer than it needed to be so had a slight twist in it. While it felt sound it was slightly softer in the middle. I replaced this, removed the electrical plug and clean it with electrical contact cleaner, gave the waste gate lever a shot of WD40 & retightened all the silicon hoses.
While it is considerably slower off the line than when I had the MAF disconnected it at least drives a little better. It is funny that it feels underpowered compared to having the MAF disconnected but I am getting somewhere just by eliminating things. What I definitely look forward to is driving off at traffic lights and not leaving those behind me in a heavy fog of black smoke.
So to all that have been helping me I sincerely thank you. I am sure that now I own a D2 I will be back here again seeking guidance although I will try & be as active as I can to pay it forward.
Nanocom is on its way after getting the 20% off code here so if anyone is in Alice or is driving through & finds themselves in trouble feel free to get on to me & I'll be happy to help where I can.
Again thank you & Kind Regards
If it drives better with MAF unplugged it means you need a new VDO one that's a fact, aftermarket or old MAF sensors will give erratic readings even though the readings are within the accepted limits so no fault code is logged but driveability is affected, it's no way that the default mode for MAF open circuit to be better than a well working sensor.... though if there is a boost box fitted for that management nothing is normal anymore.
Well I'm now sorted. It still isn't right. It is better than it was but it's very slow off the line until it gets to 2k rpm.
Today I did the defender mod to bypass the Wastegate modulator. Took it for drive but still not right.
Need to test the Wastegate itself now.
What's a VDO If I might ask mate?
VDO is the brand of maf that is the only one to get , the others generally speaking are a waste of plastic, did you shorten the wastegate rod ?.
I didn't shoten it. Am reluctant to play incase I over boost. when diagnostic tool arrived I may give it a go. More research to be done before playing with that. Rather be cautious as I'm not sure about what previous owner has done being I've found a boost box (and he told me it's remapped). With the new MAF it no longer overfuels which is good in the manner that I won't have some Hairy Armpitter report me for emissions (I had great power but also left a smoke turd whenever pulling off the line).
My waste gate lever is at about 7 o'clock & is free when arm is removed.
It's only below 2k that there is an issue. Turbo Lag Style. I unfortunately can try to accelerate off the line but just pull away slowly until 2k.
I may pull the intercooler and give that a clean also. I did have a major service about 500kms ago & if they over oiled I may have got gunked up there.
Mate I am learning so much. Again thank you so much for your time & help. My disko is definitely not a pretty City 4x4 and the wife hates it but I'm convinced if I keep going I'll have an excellent tourer so the work will continue until I have it right.
Siemens is the MAF I got mate. Definately had an effect. Unplug it & it goes back to Black Smoke. Just wish it pulled as hard now it knows what air it's getting. Lol
VDO / Siemens , same same , all good , just be aware as I said before that the boost box will mask the true reading on your nanocom , you can either bypass the boost box to read , or leave it connected and fit a boost gauge . egt gauge advisable too. If it seemed slower when you disconnected the boost modulator , then you may as well refit as it has a benefit over the defenders , only time you don't want one on a disco is if its had a vgt turbo fitted.
SITREP
So I'm pulling away a little better after drowning gate in wd40 & doing the modulator bypass (doubt this has helped). I only hear the turbo sometimes when accelerating (when I have slightly better power). I am really hoping it is a sticky or nonclosing wastgate as the truck pulls like a bloody train when I have the MAF disconnected so I know she has it in her, I just gotta find what's making her lazy.
Tomorrow I'm going to disconnect the actuator Rod and see how stiff the wastgate is ( and ensure the actuator Rod is the correct length & has the wastgate closing properly).
I did try the other day but that bloody cerclip is a pain to get off. May need to remove the heat shield which I was hoping not to have to do. I got caught up so only did the Modulator bypass.
Also I'll post a pic of a hose I'm not sure what is called. It is just off to the left of the turbo and is a coolant line. It appears to have a weep so I'll have to buy a new one.
Hope all are well & thank you again for the help.
PS. Nanocom on way soon I hope. I'll invest in guages also. This is my first turbo. So I need an IGT & Boost guages. What other guages do you guys recommend?
Also could this be related to learned values? It was running for quite a while with a bung MAF. Is clearing the Values easy with the Nanocom
