Hmm, the D2 had a TD5,,
The D1 had a coolant tank that failed.
which one did you have again?![]()
Hi,
I used to own Disco2 TDi. I bought it new and loved it but eventually sold it because of recuring overheating issues. The plastic pressurised tank would split along the seam then loose coolant till it overheated.
Second or thrid time it happened it cuased a head warp so the head was honed and repaired. But then a month or two later it failed again so I was given a new long motor by LR even though it was way out of warrantee. First event happened at 11 months so I argued it was a repeating existing problem.
At the time the dealer kept telling me that no others had this issue and that no one in the Australian network could figure out the problem. It may well have been fixed by the new long motor but I could no longer trust the vehicle.
I'm writing here now because I have a Freelander now so I'm back on these forums and I'm wondering what the real story with the Disco was....
Did others have a recurring issue with splitting plastic coolant tanks?

Yeah... I have been a bit confused by some of what Ive seen on here... I thought mine was a D2... I think it was the last one before they came with built in roof rails. The rear roof windows had a rasied or curved rubber seal all the way round them... later ones looked more flush with body.
It had TDi motor 4 cyl. So I've been thinking it was D2 but really a D1? I might scratch around and see if i can find anything in what is laughingly called 'my records' to indicate what I really had. My memory sucks... I cant even recal what year it was.
So my coolant tank was a pressurised plastic one... did they ever switch to metal?
No metal. Can buy. Yours is a D1 given 4 cylinder and raised rubbers as opposed to 5 cylinder and annealed glass with flush thin rubbers. Also D1 was prone to overflow bottle problems especially black bottles. Cheers
I had my '93 black tank welded,, and it actually worked,,
the pro said he wouldnt take money because of the type of plastic--
makes sense,, ten years production later and nobody can weld my D2 front bumper----

Yeah I think it was black. But why do they rupture? The dealer kept saying it must be compression pressure because the standard coolant pressure wouldn't bust it.
That's why I didn't just get a metal one fabbed up. I figured there was a underlying cause that needed fixing.
So this is interesting. Thanks for your replies. Good to finally start getting a answer.
I never had a problem towing the race car with the Rossi,, sat in traffic during summer on the M1 over the Brisbane river, clutching from first to neutral for 2 hours heading north to the Sunshine Coast, ( SOLD me on an auto--) and this was after the tank was welded,,
but yes,, they all failed,, can only be the top and bottom moulds not being joined properly
