    TD5 Gearbox rebuild

    Hi brains trust.

My TD5 gearbox seems to have a leak in the front seal. Lots of oil coming out of it and the clutch is slipping a bit. Just had new clutch flywheel etc put in 4 months ago, and I can see the oil dripping when parked.

The question is who can do the box rebuild for a reasonable price in the eastern suburbs preferably. I actually dont mind going Nth or Sth really.

I can take it to my mechanic and get them to remove, but I'm wondering if its more cost effective to get a gearbox person to do it.

    Advice and direction appreciated.

    As always, thanks in advance.

    Hi Timdo,
If you have just had the flywheel replaced I'm not sure why you are assuming that the gearbox needs a rebuild due to an oil leak. How do you know the front gearbox seal is leaking? If oil is leaking out of either gearbox or rear main seal the oil would be leaking out of the same place.
To me the symptoms you describe unless the drain in the bottom of the bell housing is blocked would be aiming at the rear main seal. Did the rear main get replaced as part of the flywheer repair?

If the rear main wasn't installed properly this is maybe where you should be looking. Also if it is "only" the rear main or the front seal of the gearbox you could well get away with just replacing the seal and not rebuilding the whole gearbox.

Just been through a similar excersise, I found the rear main seal damaged.

    Cheers Marty

sorry guys. Victoria, Melbourne is where i'm looking.

i dont think its the rear main seal as the oil is the wrong colour. when the flywheel was replaced i dont think they did the seal.

    Wink And also..

The people who did the flywheel job may well have done something to cause the leak.

    Have you canvassed their position?

    Hi Timdo1,
Oil the wrong colour..............!!!! An R380 5 speed manual has standard 75W-90 oil in it AFAIK, if it is the wrong colour have you got ATF oil in the gearbox or are you using something not "golden" in the engine. If you have ATF in the gearbox this might be a contributing factor to your problem.

    Cool R380 lube

R380 can have all sorts of things in it, but generally it should have MTF 94 or its equivalent. Early R380s had Dex3 in them - stiff shifts and baulky, and LR changed to MTF94

    Cheers

When i say wrong colour, i mean engine oil after a short time is black. What coming out pf the gearbox is a golden colour. it just dosent look like engine oil.

thanks for the amv suggestion. Has anyone else had one repaired?
