Any single din player will fit with no issues. You can get LR plugs to ISO plugs, or just get the wiring diagram color guide and cut the LR connector off and go direct to ISO.

I usually cut off the harness and put bullet connectors in, then bullet connector the new radio too, makes it easier to change at a later date. Also I tag the harness when I do this so that I don't need the wiring guide anymore.

There are 2 screws hidden under a trim beneath the radio face, carefully prise that off and everything else is straight forward. There is another screw that is vertical to the upper part of the dash, you need a very stubby posi-drive to undo it.

The old stacker probably won't work with the new unit and if you plan on connecting a USB drive or use a CD full of MP3 then it's not worth carrying around or faffing to get working. You can just remove that and try to remove as much wiring as possible.
You might find the accessory guides on the RAVE CD's helpful to that.

FWIW I replaced mine with a 'mechless' unit, i.e. radio and USB, no CD at all. It's about half depth of standard unit and was from supercheap.

I recently upgraded the radio in my 2004 Disco 2 and i was advised to not put in one of the foldout screens by a few places I went to. It will only take a single Din unit in the dash.
I wanted Bluetooth and ended up putting in a Kenwood KDC-BT600U unit with a CD and Bluetooth. It cost about $230 or so. I had a guy install it which cost about $100 and I think it was worth it. He spliced in the connections to the existing connector so the original connector was not messed with. The only thing that does not work is the steering wheel controls. It could have been done but at a cost of about $180 for a adapter unit. I did not think it worth paying that much.
I think if I did it again I would go for a Pioneer or Alpine. I don't really know why but the support from Kenwood seems a bit lacking.
I did have some trouble getting the hands free microphone working and eventually put it up near the rear view mirror.

If you buy a Pioneer or probably any of the popular Japanese brands you can get an adaptor that converts from the ISO plug to the radio wiring.

To fit the set, there is a steel "sleeve" which will fit in the DIN hole and you bend up the tabs to hold it in place. The radio head then just slides in and locks.
There is a socket in the back of the dash that a rubber bung fits into for a standard DIN radio, but for a mechless unit this is probably unnecessary.

I also would now buy a mechless unit as my Pioneer bluetooths to my phone , and has a USB plug . No need to carry CDs at all.

I went the cheap ebay route after one of the buttons on the original head unit failed which also meant that I couldn't enter the unlock code, essentially bricking the unit.
I got something along the lines of this:
1 Din Single 7" HD Touch Screen Car DVD CD MP3 Bluetooth GPS Navigation + Camera | eBay

Although LR went for 1 1/2 DIN the actual space once you pull out the old unit is just a single DIN. I swapped over the unit myself with no issues or need to splice anything. It came with the bracket and harness. You will be giving up the six stack cd player, but I had no issues considering you can now use usb drives and sd cards etc. Camera input is a nice feature for when I finally get around to pulling the 'arabian nights' headliner and putting in the reverse camera. Bluetooth works pretty seamlessly and even manages to retain pairing info after the battery has been disconnected. About the only complaint is that my unit doesn't appear to decode the full range of video formats they listed, but honestly that is me looking hard for something to complain about.

In my 2001 Discovery2, steering wheel controls are non-existent, so I'm not concerned there. I'd love to have the Bluetooth Phone connectivity. Also, I suppose Disc support or CD options are not necessary either, now that you mention it, as I've all the music in the world on my phone.

I went out and took some pictures of my existing unit. As you can see, when powered on, the screen doesn't show the entire content. I'm unsure on whether this is a fault with the unit itself or perhaps a powering/earthing issue...?
