Thread: 2000 D2 CDL Light

The switch is likely out of adjustment or not working at the transfer case, I know mine is.

Would that stop it from lighting up when the ignition is first on also?

Like when all the other lights flick on for a couple of seconds

They don't do that anyway. The light check is solely system diagnostics.

All well and good.

But quite often the lights don't actually work/are intermittent, even though it IS actually engaged.

AFAIR from fitting a CDL a few months ago, the switch works from a ramp and raised flat on the selector shaft in the nose of the transfer.

The selector can push forward ( or back I cannot recall) as the spigot is turned without the CDL being engaged.
There is a big spring between the shaft and the CDL fork which allows the CDL dogs to engage as they see fit. They are big dogs and sometimes need some speed variation to engage.
The adjustment of the switch is by a collar on the switch which raises or lowers it in relation to the flat on the selector shaft .

To adjust it you will need the hands of a Japanese piano tuner, unless you remove the console floor by drilling out 1 million rivets. It would be a challenge to get a spanner in to loosen the collar without removing the console floor.

However if you can get access, you can put a multimeter over the contacts , then screw the switch in or out so that you are happy that the switch is not preventing the selector shaft from going forward or back, and that the light turns on ie you have zero resistance across the plug.

AFAIR , you put the selector into Lock, then screw down the switch until it will go no further , then back off until everything moves freely but there is still continuity.

.... the light will not illuminate until the dog clutch actually engages and for that to happen the vehicle will need to be in forward motion. The clutch usually engages within 25 metres of travel and if the light and switch are functioning you will see the indicator light.

To rule out an electrical issue just unplug the switch and bridge pins in the plug, if you get the light then the circuit is ruled out...the other things beyond a faulty switch are above my knowledge
