4.6 GEMS short block into D2

    Hi Lads,

I brought a complete new pistions, cam, top hat liners etc for my 4.0 Bosch but now found the block is completely rooted, there is a 4.6 GEMs bottom end availably that needs a rebuild, does anyone know any problems using my Reco 4.0 heads, new 4.0 cam, new 4.0 pistions etc

    cheers Dean

Heads are the same on a 4.0 and 4.6. 4.0 low comp pistons will be OK - gives a mid range comp ratio. I suspect cams are the same but not sure but you would be better up specifying this to get better gains out of a 4.6.

Has the 4.6 block been tested etc (noting 4.0 and 4.6 blocks are the same just the higher quality ones were made into 4.6) - did you actually get to the 4.0 top hatted because I would get this done for your new block.

Why is the 4.0 block no good.

AFAIR the Crank position sensor mounting point is different between a GEMS and Thor.
So check that out and see what can be organised.

Hmm the thor 4L pistons are crossbolted,, will they even bolt to a gems crank??

All 4.0 (not 3.9) and 4.6 engines irrespective whether they are Gems or Thor are cross bolted.

As raised by Phillip - a lot of ancillary bits and pieces may differ between Gems and Thor but I don't know.

When I looked at this the stock 4.6 cam on a High compression 4.6 was more aggressive than the 4.0 high compression cam. Otherwise cross bolted mains etc same. Just need to attach knock sensors and crank position sensor and need cam sprocket from 4.0 as there is some difference that can cause the cam sensor not to work properly. Might as well put new timing gear in.

    Cheers
