to expand a little... the switch provides power to the IDM (Intelligent Drivers Module) which in turn performs power switching operations for a number of vehicles electrical systems.

It's there to protect you if the vehicle decides to lay on it's side for a little sleep. - it cuts power to the engine.

They are basically a ball bearing switch, and they have been known to trip accidentally.

So if you are stuck and all seems dead.. it is worth pressing the top of this switch to ensure it hasn't tripped. ( assuming the vehicle is not having previously mentioned sleep )

    And properly secured

I saw one that some rocket scientist moved and secured with a single cable tie... it flopped around all over the place and he wondered why he had problems....

Same as on the Disco 1s, used to drive me crazy on corrugated tracks, would trip and stop and turn on the hazards lights.

The interior construction of the inertia switch is like in the pic only it's shape is different on the D2, if it gets old the magnet and target plate's sping are loosing theyr strenght and dont retain the ball too well and that's why it makes tricks on bumps, a new one will behave better for another 15 years or so
