I get where you are coming from and frustrations but a couple of things. 1 there are many of these motors that out up 300 to 400k without issues with low temp thermostats and head studs. The d1s did the high k's with just low temp thermos and head bolts.

The Audi...dont get me started. The thing has out of warranty the capacity to cost more for things such just blend motors for the AC than a good rebuild of a D2 V8... got way to many German cars including Q7 diesels, A5 V8 Coupes, VW Golfs (all recent models) in the family and close friends

    Cheers

Without a doubt there some good rigs out there but I'm not in the market to re-tweak the engine with studs and a low temp thermostat. If that's the saving grace then LR should be the ones with the smarts and initiative to undertake the modification.

I'm not buying a Q7, I'm just relaying the experience and the reflection of sometimes you have to cut your loses. There's other options and at the moment I'm thinking German.

I'm not sure there are many German options to a D1,,

Anyway hope you buy well and let us know what the new one looks like

To be honest unless it was an AMG sledgehammer or BMW M5 straight 6 from the 80's I would swerve the Germans and go Japanese.

There are a heap of good D2's on the maket at reasonable prices at the moment, The D2a's are the pick of the litter.
The td5's are cheap to run But lack the "grunt" of the little 4l V8's in my opinion, The D2a's come with the CDL as standard equipment as well.
Don't let 1 failed V8 put you off the brand, there are many of these old D2's still happily barrelling along the roads and tracks in Aus and doing it easilly.

Will let you know, sure to disappoint some. Won't be a LR. Can't justify a LR at the moment and would like a different experience.

Toyota maybe but not a fan of being like everyone else. German seems to have more safety features.

Just punted a D2a in very good condition other than the lower block. Not running the same gauntlet. Don't think any of the family would be impressed.

Sepends you just want something higher like a suv or something you can go more serious off roading.
The germans have there issues as well and to be honest i would not lile to own one out of warrenty really but thats same for rovers too now.
If ya had of kept it would of been better to do a ls swap then run the guntlet with the last of the rover v8s

Zee Germans really did a number on the D2,,
up till then parts for the whole LR brand were swapable,,
but the D2 was produced in a way to ensure nothing other than gen LR parts could be used,,
even now 20 years later only a handful can recode ecu's, nothing aftermarket works like OE in the engine management department,,,

maybe the D2 was the forerunner of all things "modern" at Landrover,,,

good or bad? depends on your wallet I think...
